Maverick Quickie-Moment of silence for Toriyama-San

Really!?

Not that the exclamation was because of the recent death but that I had to do three Maverick Quickies on a Friday.....

If you've read the news, Akira Toriyama has died from subdural hematoma....

at age 68....

Apparently it happened on March 1st, but we didn't hear about until a week later.

So out of respect, I'm keeping everything short with no photos and no long sentences so we can all have a moment of silence for the great manga creator of the Dragon Ball franchise...

R.I.P Akira Toriyama.

Maverick Quickie-Goodbye MSI Monitor

Today, I made a heartfelt goodbye to the MSI OPTIX G2712 Monitor I was using with my PC from Early August 2023 to January 25 2024.

I went to my local Recycle Depot and disposed of the old MSI monitor there.

For those who haven't followed along, My MSI monitor crapped out due to bad capacitors on the mainboard.

While the monitor still works, I get these Horizontal Pixels on the bottom of the IPS panel.

I was about to fix it myself but I don't have a soldering iron and it wasn't worth repairing anyway due to the the panel getting scratched during it's time in storage so I just e-cycled the damn thing.

Whatever though. I have a 1440p ASUS TUF VG27AQ Monitor which I had since February 9th 2024 so I'm fine with that.

It may have cost $359+tax which was more than my MSI which set me back $279 but hey, you pay for that kind of quality of monitor, you've earned it....

Compared to the $800+ I'd be paying for a 4K or Ultrawide Monitor.

Let's hope my ASUS monitor lasts as long as my ACER monitor has.

Update as of August 3 2024:

It's been 5 to 6 months since I purchased my ASUS TUF VG27AQ monitor from Best Buy at Downtown Vancouver.

And so far, the monitor hasn't been showing any lines on the bottom.

I guess the MSI Monitor I had by this point had a manufacturing defect that wasn't caught.

But whatever, my monitor is still better than ASUS' motherboard and price problems.

Yes I'm aware of a certain Hardware reviewer's fight with the company.

Update as of July 2 2025:

Even after a year of use, My Asus TUF VG27AQ monitor is still working fine with no problems.

But Now it's taken the place of my old Acer as I've now upgraded my main display to a larger 34" Asus TUF Ultrawide Display.

Maverick Quickie-A Cameo from 8 years ago led to a promise....

I need a breather so how about another MAVERICK QUICKIE?

Was browsing through my External Hard Drives because I'm still in the process of organizing my stuff after my infamous May 2022 Accidental Data Deletion and later subsequent Data Recovery.

Anyway, was browsing and I came across this.

This was from a 2016 episode of THE SIMPSONS from 8 years ago as of this post. By this point, FUTURAMA had ended it's run 3 years ago from the airing of this SIMPSONS Episode.

But ever a fervent fan would always at the time whine about the cancelation of a good series and MATT GROENING heard us all.

The segment from this episode was called HOMER LIVE. It was a bit part where Homer, as animated by a live animation rig, would answer questions from people of different time zones. From what I remember, it was split between the EAST and WEST coast.

The EAST Coast feed happened first due to a 5 Hour difference but I preferred the WEST COAST Feed because it had a bit where Homer endorsed Bernie Sanders. You had to understand that the infamous 2016 elections were taking place back then too.

Regardless of feeds however, There was some premade animations that were used to pad out the distance shots from Homer. My personal favorite of the Padding was the image of Bender demanding that FUTURAMA come back.

Never thought that it would become a reality 7 years later. It actually was announced in 2022 but didn't air on HULU of all networks until 2023.
Yeah, FUTURAMA can't seem to catch a break due to network apathy despite a wonderfully committed fanbase.

But hey, at least one of my favorite Sci-Fi animated shows survived the mishandlings of FOX, ADULT SWIM, COMEDY CENTRAL.

It also survived the JOHN DIMAGGIO salary disputes, WGA, and SAG-AFTRA strikes too so that's a plus.

To quote one of the opening captions:
THE HUMANS SHALL NOT DEFEAT US!!!

Now that's dedication of protection.

For those where to watch FUTURAMA, the entirety of the series is on HULU via the Disney+ service.... for USA viewers.

I live in Canada so while I still watch it on Disney+, it's on the STAR service.

Still, it's better to watch it on a service that's not effed up by a streaming service's apathy for a country or BELLMEDIA's monopoly on Warner Discovery Content on CRAVE....

or Asshole executives who only care about the money.....
(I've got my death glare locked-on you Zaslav.)

Whoops... there I go into TERMINATOR MODE again..... I really do need to control my contempt but it's so damn hard especially with all the drama around Hollywood that I'm reading left and right.

Anyhow, I'm seeing mixed comments on the writing for the 2023 seasons of Futurama.
What's up with that? You asked for it to come back and both Matt Groening and David X Cohen obliged.

Let's hope things improve with the 2024 episodes.... whenever they start appearing on Hulu.

OMAHA 01-My idea and pitch for an adult-animated adaptation of an existing comic book

If the title of this blogpost isn't a tipoff, then of course, I'm interested in pitching a series.

But why this Cat of all protagonists?

Well..... here's the backstory.

On Sunday November 14 2021, TUBI premiered their animated adaptation of GILBERT SHELTON'S THE FABULOUS FURRY FREAK BROTHERS.

Except, instead of looking like that art above, they completely redesigned the characters to that goddamn PUPPET-RIGGED art style show below.

And the show is now called THE FREAK BROTHERS.

I've actually never watched an episode of this adaptation but I'll dedicate my time to watching it if I get a chance to but anyway, I'd figure, if someone or some network wants to create a TV Series based on an ADULT COMIC, why can't I?

Here's what I think should get adapted into TV or Streaming:
OMAHA THE CAT DANCER.

Why OMAHA? Because it hasn't been adapted yet and FURRY FANDOMS are large enough that I think it warrants it. Also, I would love to work with REED WALLER since he's still alive and well.

OF COURSE REED WALLER WOULD NEED TO WORK ON THE ADAPATION. It's important to have the original creator of the comic to serve as creator or producer of an animated adaptation.

If bringing in the likes of DOUG TENNEPEL for CATSCRATCH

SCOTT ADAMS FOR DILBERT

is possible, then it should be POSSIBLE to bring in REED WALLER.

The series is set in MIPPLE CITY, MINNESOTA so.... the setting is already perfect.

Of course, I understand that there will be fights over whether to stay true to the series explicit routes or tone everything down to make it palatable for the animation market.

Honestly, I'm against toning down content for the sake of art but I understand that the explicit adult nature of the comics as written by Reed Waller and Kate Worley would never get past the bastard executives, nor the censors, nor THE FELLAS AT THE FREAKING FCC.... so I've been thinking about how this should plan out for my pitch and here it is:

The story is set several months after Minnesota's BLUE LAW was passed , putting OMAHA and her friend Shelly Hine out of a job.

Also, OMAHA'S boyfriend CHUCK KATT has disowned his tycoon father but now must work for his former boss ANDRE DEROC who has opened a Computer Manufacturing company in Minnesota.

The name of the company is called KATERERIFIC DATA CORP, or KDC.

Chuck, Omaha, and Shelly apply for positions as TECH SPECIALISTS at the company but they don't share adjacent Cubicles but at least they provide the only TECH SUPPORT in NORTH AMERICA that isn't outsourced and frustrating for other people.

So yeah, it's sort of a workplace comedy but I still want to keep the SOAP OPERA aspect of the series but at the same time I always wonder, who watches SOAP OPERAS NOWADAYS?

In essence, I want the feel of the series to have a similar feeling to THE OFFICE

or maybe even THE IT CROWD.

So who are the characters?

Obviously we have OMAHA JENSON(Real name SUSAN JENSEN)
The title character. She's a former exotic dancer turned TECH SPECIALIST who's charm, wit, sarcasm, and charisma prove her to be popular within the company.

Then there's Chuck KATT(Real Name Charles Tabey Jr.)
son of business tycoon Charles Tabey Sr and another tech specialist. Omaha's boyfriend and one who just wants to take seriously the life of a responsible adult that's easier said than done.

Then there's Shelly Hine.
Omaha's bisexual best friend from their night club days. She was caught in the line of fire of a gangster who tried to assassinate Andre DeRoc. While saved Andre she did, she got shot in the spine and now is in a wheelchair but even then, she refused the motorized chairs and stuck with the traditional one's. She is more snarky than Omaha but still friendly nonetheless. Also works as a tech specialist.

Then there's Jerry
Chuck's high school friend and a former alcoholic. Also works as a TECH SPECIALIST. He's a rather weird nutjob but like Chuck, he just wants to get the job done.

Maria Tabey
Chuck's mother who lives close by as Writer for the Mipple City News Website dedicated to providing the most real of all news in the city.

The list of characters will expand but this will have to do for the time being.

But what I do ask for this particular adaptation is.....

NO PUPPET RIGS!!!!!!

I WANT THE GODDAMN SERIES TO BE DRAWN BY HAND,
FRAME-BY-FRAME!!!!

NO IFS, ANDS, OR BUTS!!!

But will this animated show use physical tools like pencils, Col-Erase pencils, animation paper, acetate celluloid, acrylic paint, or ARRI digital cameras?

Of course not.

The pencil and animation paper, maybe.

But nowadays, even if everything is drawn by hand frame-by-frame, it's all done on WACOM CINTIQ displays on software like TOON BOOM HARMONY or ADOBE ANIMATE.

But why OMAHA?

Well I need to start small. I'm still not yet ready to pitch my MARYLANDIA series until I have all the knowledge, resources, and guts to keep all creative control to myself.

But I want to address the issue with the whole paradigm of taking an existing comic book and turning it into an animated adaptation but I want to preserve the integrity of the artist's and writer's vision without executives mucking it up for all of us. That's the problem that permeates today's contents.

As for what NETWORK will air or stream OMAHA, I'm not sure.

As long as it's with a network that does not screw with creators over company tax purposes, I'm fine but I still want complete creative control.... and so does Reed Waller.

But what about the art style. Will that have to change?

I hope not. I want the art of OMAHA as drawn by REED WALLER to remain as is but I will have to study the drawings and experiment with construction, body mechanics, acting, etc. just to get used to drawing the characters.
"I hope you draw me exactly like Reed Waller does and not your style, Dan."

Shelly..... of course I'll draw you and your friends the same way Reed does. Just like with my caricatures, you and your friends will remain the same.

And thanks for referring to me by my real name. All the other animated/anime characters just call me Maverick but thanks for using my formal name.

No Maverick LTD. art style and No puppet rigs. Just pure REED WALLER art from there on.

I'm going to end this post with just the pitch idea. I'll get to drawing the characters and experimenting with Reed Waller's art style and showing them off in a future post.... Not sure if I'll post a part 02 this month but I'll get to it.

Exposure Sheets-Animation's Past time.....

Before the era of Non-Linear Editing Software suites, before the era of animation software timelines, before the era of CGI Graph Editors, there was a paper timeline used by the old timers in animation where the way to animate a character on the beat was to follow directions on pieces of paper next to the drawing.

That paper is called the EXPOSURE SHEET.

To many a modern animator, especially if you only animate on Maya, Blender, or Unreal, this looks all confusing. This is because these exposure sheets were made during a time when Hand-Drawn, Frame-by-Frame 2D Animation was still dominant.

While 2D Animation is still around, nowadays, it's all puppet-rigs and WACOM CINTIQS but even if it's still hand-drawn, there's no need for paper EX Sheets since you can just scrub on the timeline and see how things are going for in TOONBOOM. The same goes for the ONION SKIN that animation software suites like TOONBOOM have.

Sure, TOONBOOM still has the option to replicate the original EX SHEET system but if you animate strictly by soundtrack, intuition, onion skins, timelines, and keyframes, what's the point of the EX Sheet in today's animation?

So how does an EX SHEET work?
Well it depends on the formatting but regardless, it's broken up by these things:

01. SCENE
"No... Not like up here..... SCENE is a little different on EX Sheets. The way it works is it's to indicate what scene the animator is working on."

Uh... Thank you Charlie and Vaggie... Now let's continue.

02. ACTION
Uh.... sort of what this GIF is insinuating. But really, in order to pull this off, you actually have to write down to the animator what the character is doing. In this GIF's case, Bugs Bunny has just outwitted a BASEBALL LUMMOX and is doing his victory skip.

Some write down just the tempos and timing on how to pull this off,

Others draw a rough representation of said action.

Next we have :
03. Dialogue
Can't find my LOAD OF BULL gif at the moment so here's my attempt at subtitles.
The "THAT'S A LOAD OF BULL" line is from the ADV Dub.

Putting dialogue in the mouths of animated characters isn't a load of bull Misato but getting the vowels right for the animators sure is but hey, we signed up for this job so make the most of it.

You may notice on the EX sheets of many a show or movie that there's letters scrawled on the boxes. Those are to help the artists time the dialogue to the character.

Sort of like how lyrics are constructed and worded out on a sheet music.
Except, these lyrics are in Latin...

In animation, the dialogue is pre-recorded because if the dialogue is recorded first, it makes synchronization much easier for the animators.

In the olden days, the dialogue was mostly recorded on acetate film but I guess a separate track just for the animators was distributed on Phonograph Vinyl records
Which then transitioned to magnetic tape Compact Cassettes around the 70s to the early 2000s.

And finally to today's system where we use .WAV files in our computer.....

or in the case of an animation studio, their Network Servers.

Because of the nature of timelines in editing as well as all of this, the dialogue can seem cryptic for the unsuspected but the words are there. It's just that the building blocks of the dialogue are broken up so that they can be timed, just like the lyrics on a music sheet.

04. Layers
Notice the numbers on the top headers? That's to indicate the number of cel layers used for the animation.
Yes, regardless of how cheap or how expensive the production is, cel layers are frugal for the production of animation.

It can range from things such as background elements moving in parallax for the multiplane camera Both literal or in software.

Other times, it's for separate body layers for a character so one body part moves but the other is stationary.
"Tenchi help. Some jackass at photo department stole my cel layer for my body and now I'm just a floating head with incomplete acrylic paint for hair. "

Alright Ryoko. You'll be fine. I'll help you find your missing body cel layer after I finish this blogpost.

Anyway, what do the numbers and arrows mean on that part of the EX Sheet?

It's to tell the Camera Department how to move the layers of artwork on the overhead camera frame-by-frame.

Or in the case of people working on ToonBoom or any animation software suite: KEYFRAMES.

Speaking about the camera department...

05. Camera Instructions
Back in the olden days, the camera doesn't move. It's actually the layers of artwork that move.
Nowadays, it's a matter of choosing the old style of camera movement or moving the virtual camera on your software. Regardless, the camera principles are still the same.

The instructions are given to someone assigned to operate the layers of artwork on the camera.

On a standard downfacing camera, it's just one person moving the artwork and pressing a remote button for the camera shutter.

But for the multiplane camera, it can require 5 people to operate the camera.
We have 4 People working on the layers of animation...

while the 5th person operates the overhead camera. Doing things like checking how the scene is working out on the viewfinder

as well as operating that same remote shutter button.

The instructions can range on how many inches the artwork should move on the pegs, what's the best DX percentage for certain things such as shadows.
"Kind of like the shadow of my body here if I had it...."

Yes, Ryoko. Kind of like your body shadow.
That's set by the camera's Double Exposure setting to set the opacity of the shadow.
In your case Ryoko, your shadow's Double Exposure is set somewhere around 40% opacity.

What's double exposure?
It's the part where you shoot twice under the camera. The scene would be set with the shutter set at a certain exposure setting while that same scene would be shot again but with normal settings.

In your case Ryoko, the first exposure would give us a big ass blob for that shadow of yours but when the second pass comes in without your shadow, the operator opens up that shutter to shoot that percentage of the pass that contained the shadow and voila, nice opacity for a shadow.

The same thing can be done on Toom Boom, just that the tech is different and uses Node Graphs instead of physical camera exposure tech.

Other elements include what the scene is all about, how long the footage is for that day of shooting, the production number, who the animators and assistants are, the scene numbers, the sheet numbers, etc.

Oh and it doesn't end here. Sometimes even when all that is finished, the scene could for final evaluation and something totally gets screwed up.

Things don't always go to plan and can result in a retake order.

There are multiple things that can result in a retake order but the one thing I find interesting is the original camera work done on DISNEY'S SNOW WHITE. I know this because it was on the DIAMOND EDITION Blu-Ray I was borrowing from my local library.

Anyway, what happened with this particular scene in SNOW WHITE?
Well according to Don Hahn in that particular featurette, a scene which he described is the one where Prince Charming is singing to Snow White, after all that hard work shooting the various passes underneath that camera, the goddamn thing had to be reshot on film because the first batches of film to come back from the developers for that scene suffered....

a NEGATIVE DEFECT.

Nobody wants to see DEFECTS in their NEGATIVES

so that scene had to be shot again. But the real kick in the balls was that it had to be done at breakneck speed because the retake order was dated 12/15/1937.

That would be Wednesday December 15th 1937.

And the film's deadline was....
Tuesday December 21st 1937!

HOLY CRAP!!!!!

Normally a film would have to be delayed to allow these things to be fixed in the long run but not for Snow White. Walt had to prove to his early naysayers at the time he could turn in a triumph so a delay was out of the question. The scene was reshot, reedited on a MOVIOLA, threaded in the projector of the CARTHAY CIRCLE THEATER, and everybody in HOLLYWOOD declared the film a triumph in animation. And it still resonates with us nearly 87 years later.

And don't think that digital film is immune to retake orders because that still happens. Whether the camera CMOS has bad pixels, the animation vector art gets corrupted, you didn't save your project, or worse your files weren't backed up in the event of an accidental deletion or hard drive failure, retake orders can still happen in digital form.

I was bored. Didn't have any rants, ramblings, or MAYA related tips to talk about and I had work at the airport the day I posted this so I needed something educational in this blog so EXPOSURE SHEETS and what they're used for was something I needed to discuss. Also back in March 2024, I've done a minor change to my bedroom art studio where I moved my old desk back but as a desk for use as my physical drawing table as well as my food table.

But the drawing aspect is what really matters because I'm considering drawing my caricatures as well as artwork that won't be done on my WACOM TABLET.

As for the Dialogue bit, I was referring to the Western Style of Animation.

With the exception of AKIRA and GRAVE OF THE FIREFLIES, Anime just does the animation first, then records the voices, even in the original Japanese.
