Bone-A childhood comic series who's hopes of animated adaptation are slim+Anecdotes
Back when I was in the sixth grade,
which would have been between September 2009 to June 2010,
I was exposed heavily to Jeff Smith's BONE comics.
And suddenly, a whole new world of Tolkienesque Fantasy opened to me in ways I couldn't imagine before said exposure.
Probably because even in Late 2009,
Peter Jackson's LORD OF THE RINGS movies were still fresh in people's minds at the time.
And this was before I got into the anime FAIRY TAIL though the anime did premiere in Japan in 2009 but us Americans/Canadians wouldn't get it legally until 2011 when FUNIMATION got the license to localize the series in North America.
But 12 year old me was obsessed to the bone, no pun intended, with the Bone comic series.
It had things in the stories you just couldn't get with any other Comics published during your childhood....
Unless you count the various Manga from other sources.
But things you see in BONE are just stuff you won't find in most comics that touch dark subject matter.
The sheer fact that this series got printed in 1991 publications is amazing.
A story that gets away with things like dark subject matter,
Political Allegories,
and mutilation,
Back in 1991, you won't find something like that in other comics...
Unless you look at the various superhero comics or whatever manga gets past all those publishers back in the day.
A story meant to be told to children, yet has stuff that's often pretty dark and gory.
With a story that dark, you know it's bound to be good.
I live for dark stories with actual character.
While I've stated I got into Bone back in the Sixth grade, I didn't exactly start at that period.
My first real exposure to the BONE comics was at a Local Hair Salon at Venables Steet and Commercial Drive. which was within a walking distance from my apartment at Frances Street & Victoria Drive.
You know some places like a hair salon or Dentist's office has these things for kids to entertain themselves like Magazines or Comics?
Well, this Salon had a copy of ROCK JAW: MASTER OF THE EASTERN BORDER
Reading that, I was mesmerized by not only the drawings but the story.Did I mention in the header that the chances of BONE getting a Movie or TV Series is virtually slim?
Yeah..... Let me elaborate on that.
Back when I was 12, during my time in the sixth grade, I was so obsessed with BONE that I envisioned in my mind what BONE would have looked like if it had been adapted into either a movie or a TV Series.
Fast Forward years later, that still has not been made a reality....
In fact, throughout BONE's 35+ year history since it's first publication in 1991, BONE has had a horrible history of fights between Jeff Smith and Animation Executives on how to handle the BONE I.P.
The first attempt was in the late 90s when Nickelodeon had interest in adapting it into a Movie.
Boy, did that go horribly awry.
Nickelodeon's execs demanded the BONE Cousins be voiced by Children and they also demanded POP Songs from the likes of NSYNC, Britney Spears, etc.
Good thing Jeff walked out of the pitch because Pop Songs in a comic series like BONE would be a poor choice due to the perceived anachronisms as well as undermining the Serious Nature of the story.
Then in 2008, Warner Bros. picked up the license.
(Keep in mind this was before that INFAMOUS David Zaslav became CEO)
After years of stagnant negotiations, the deal fell through.
From what little Information I have, the Warner Bros. deal was that the film would have been a trilogy of films and they would all have been CGI because...... EXECUTIVES..... and their MONEY......
But good thing that deal fell through because of what's to come within WB in the later years.
In 2019, Netflix picked up the series, raising hopes that a proper 2D Adaptation would finally commence......
WHOOPDIE-EFFING-DOOOO!!!!!
NETFLIX THEN PULLED THE GODDAMN PLUG IN APRIL 2022 DUE TO AN ALLEGED RESTRUCTURING....
But really, it was because Netflix's EXECUTIVES fell victim to Mr. BOSS BABY and his findings of NETFLIX's poor stock reports in 2022.
OH SHUT UP MR. BOSS BABY. YOU EFFED UP A PERFECT DEAL WITH NETFLIX AND I DON'T WANT TO HEAR SOURDOUGH FROM YOU.
ALSO, GIVE MR. BIG BABY HIS RIGHT TO EAT THEM COOKIES.
But yeah, I was devastated to the bone back in April 2022 when I heard that Netflix pulled the plug on the BONE adaptation.
While Jeff is still hunting for other studios to help him adapt the comics into a series, It goes to show you that in this current Animation Studio Climate, Execs are not interested in these adaptations due to either obsession with the money or demanding changes to the source material which many a creator is not going to accept.
As of now, according to LOST MEDIA BUSTERS, this is the only evidence of a Netflix series that at one point existed
On the topic of Warner Bros. I'm actually glad the deal with Jeff Smith and Warner Bros. fell through because of what would happen later when they brought in Zaslav in 2022 after the Discovery merger.
If what happened with Olan Roger's FINAL SPACE is any indication, I don't want to think about what Zaslav would have done to BONE had the deal with Netflix didn't go forward in 2019.
While we are still fuming at NETFLIX for them shitting on the Bone Series,
they still own the rights so while that can't be changed.
I seriously hope NETFLIX changes their minds before Jeff Smith turns 70.
I originally started this post in the summer of 2024 but I went through multiple revisions due to me still raging over NETFLIX's handling of the BONE series and not giving a crap over JEFF SMITH's reaction to the news.
And I was still reeling in from my own personal issues at the time so I had no desire to post back then.
And besides, 2026 is the 35th Anniversary of the BONE franchise so posting this at the within the year feels more fitting.
And why is SKYDANCE in the labels for this post?
Because in the later years, PARAMOUNT would buy WARNER BROS. after the NETFLIX deal fell through after they backed out of buying WB.....
However, NETFLIX still has the rights to BONE, which they wrote off any chances.......
Ok..... It's all in the past. Instead of me raging, I should treat myself to either some TROPICANA Juice or a good blend of GREEN TEA.

MAFALDA on NETFLIX
From September 29 1964 until June 25 1973, an Argentine Comic Artist by the name of Quino(Real name :Joaquin Salvador Lavado Tejon)
enthralled both AMERICA & EUROPE with his comic about a 6 year old Argentine girl who despite her age, is concerned about the state of the world....
(No relation to today's climate as the Comics were made during the Vietnam War.)
The art style has been compared to that of both PEANUTS
& BLONDIE
in terms of how the characters look as well as some expressions that are used.
Why am I bringing up MAFALDA when I never grew up with the character?
Because my Mother, who's of Mexican descent, actually grew up reading the MAFALDA Comics in her youth back in the 1980s.
Plus, it was her who told me about the eventual release of a CGI Cartoon coming on NETFLIX, allegedly made by the same guy who made METAGOL,(Released in the US as UNDERDOGS)
I've done research and this was announcement was made in 2024.
But these shows take time so all we have now is this lone screenshot

Happy 30th Anniversary JUMBO PICTURES MOVING IN WITH DISNEY+Paramount Skydance finally buys Warner Bros. from DISCOVERY
On this day.......
ok ok.
So today is a regular year as it's the 28th of February as of this writing.
But in 1996, it was a leap year as evident as being the the year when Bill Clinton defeated Bob Dole on November 5 1996 and was re-elected as 42nd President of the United States the following January 1997.
On FEBRUARY 29 1996,
JUMBO PICTURES was fully acquired by WALT DISNEY COMPANY....
For better or worse..... depending on the circumstances....
How did this happen?
Like I said in many earlier posts, it was all VIACOM's fault!
If they hadn't frozen the budget for JUMBO back in February 1994 shortly after acquiring PARAMOUNT PICUTRES, then they wouldn't have lost the respect from JIM JINKINS, DAVID CAMPBELL, JOE AARON, etc.
But VIACOM danced with REPTAR, tripped, and chose to freeze the budget for DOUG all while keeping REN & STIMPY on the air up until late 1995.
REPTAR can pissed off at VIACOM for what they did for all I care...
But I'm sure MICKEY MOUSE was thrilled.....
If only Mickey didn't crack JUMBO's egg and replaced it with a LAUGHING SLICE OF PIZZA after a falling out with both DIC & NICK BACKAY.
Man, I really feel bad for REPTAR when he found out about VIACOM freezing JUMBO's budget as well as RUGRATS being put on hiatus from 1994 to 1997.
Here's his reaction to VIACOM's Difficult Decision on the budget circa February 1994:
Now do that again but this time against DAVID ELLISON and his SKYDANCE Company.
Doubly so since while typing this post, I heard that NETFLIX had just backed away from a counter deal to acquire WARNER BROS.... so therefore, the RED "N" has conceded defeat.
Who knows what the future will hold for use but I guess PARAMOUNT owning WB has now happened.....
Wasn't expecting that but hey, DISNEY also owns FOX so what are we gonna do?
.....
I can hear JOSH D'AMARO saying to David Ellison "THAT MAKES TWO OF US!"

Ranma 1/2 (2024) Review
I've done something similar to this when I did my SCOTT PILGRIM review back in November 2023 when I did the RTX 4080 upgrade in my PC but now it's a different tack with this particular review of RANMA 1/2 (2024)
If you've been following my BLOG throughout Mid to Late 2024, I announced and teased certain aspects of RANMA being revived following the the success of the 2022 revival of URUSEI YATSURA.
But unlike 2022's URUSEI YATSURA,
David Productions, which is famous for JOJO'S BIZARRE ADVENTURE,
Did not get contracted to do the animation for RANMA 1/2's Revival.
That honor goes to MAPPA Productions,
which I heard doesn't really have the best reputation amongst many an anime/manga fan due to issues involving artistic quality control as well as a controversy revolving around work ethic.
Hopefully, this series, as well as CHAINSAW MAN, will help redeem MAPPA..... I hope....
According to sources, as well as those Social Media Posts comparing scenes from the Revival to that of the original 1987 Manga, this revival is promising itself to be made as close to the MANGA's source material than the 1989 Anime and it's NETTOHEN adaptation would ever be.....
And when I mean that, I mean the revival is trying to match certain visuals that originated in the MANGA instead of the 1989 Anime or it's NETTOHEN Continuation.
To back that up, here's three shots from the MARTIAL ARTS GYMNASTICS arc to compare to.
Hopefully the remake won't go to filler territory unlike what happened with the 1989 anime.
I'm happy to hear that the original Japanese Cast, most of them at least, have returned to voice their original roles.
I was somewhat disappointed to hear that the surviving cast of URUSEI YATSURA didn't reprise their roles for the 2022 remake...
with the exceptions of TOSHIO FURUKAWA and FUMI HIRANO who did return in the 2022 remake.
but even then, they don't reprise their roles. Instead, they voice ATARU's Parents in the remake.
I'm glad they brought back
KAPPEI YAMAGUCHI,
NORIKO HIDAKA,
MEGUMI HAYASHIBARA,
KOICHI YAMADERA,
REI SAKUMA,
etc.
Although I did mention in my past posts that certain characters who have yet to return might necessitate a recast.
UKYO for example is going to be recast no matter what due to the unfortunate death of HIROMI TSURU in 2017.
As for the DUB,
Everybody has been recast.
As it turns out, Netflix prefers if their dubs are made in the LOS ANGELES area instead of outsourcing to VANCOUVER or CALGARY.
I grew up with the OCEAN DUB but to see that Netflix snubbed the cast like that by going with IYUNO instead of OCEAN or Bang Zoom, really felt like a punch to the pancreas.
Which is weird considering YASHAHIME brought back almost every dub actor despite relocating the cast to Los Angeles..... more on that in a little bit....
And yes, they even brought back KIRBY MORROW for YASHAHIME before his sudden death in November 2020.
Well.... Iyuno's dub is made in Los Angeles....
But I would have preferred a BANG ZOOM dub all of the surviving Vancouver actors if possible... so it really doesn't make sense that YASHAHIME's DUB is also an L.A Dub and reunited all the Vancouver actors but NETFLIX refused to work with BANG ZOOM or any actor from Vancouver for their version of RANMA.
But then I read that the way BANG ZOOM got the Vancouver Actors to reprise their roles in YASHAHIME was due to two members of the original dub cast from INUYASHA having since moved to L.A. Plus it was a remote-work thing for the actors due to the COVID-19 Pandemic in 2020.
I now know the reason why everyone on the Dub side has been recast.
It's to compensate for the death of Robert O Smith back in 2010 but even if they brought the Vancouver cast instead of the IYUNO cast, Genma would still have to be recast.
Still with FRED TATASCOIRE even if they kept the OCEAN Cast.
A lot of us have mixed feelings with the new cast members and we'd would rather just leave the remake set to the original Japanese on Netflix's Audio Setting,
but in my opinion, I think Stephanie Sheh is the perfect Nabiki Tendo.
Oh well, At least we still have our surviving Japanese actors.... which is important for any Voice.
Of course, regardless, you may notice that some of the voices sound either noticeably off or older sounding.
I get that role reprisal can result in characters sounding older in later adaptations.
For example, FRY now sounds raspy in the HULU Revival of Futurama.
Another example was how older sounding the Japanese Cast of Lupin III sounded before the big 2011 recast.
My other issue with this particular version of RANMA 1/2 is the fact that the visuals now have that PASTEL PALETTE to them.
Some would say, "HOW COULD YOU SAY THAT?
THE ORIGINAL 1989-1992 ANIME SERIES HAD PASTELS TOO."
That's not true.
You're referring to Viz Media's original VHS and DVD Releases from the Mid-90s to the mid-2000s.
The 2014 Blu-Ray Restoration restored the colors to the high contrasting palette I prefer.
Ok so the Newspaper Screen tones rarely show up but what was MAPPA trying to do, steal SPIDERVERSE's Thunder?
Also, did Ranma's Clothes get baggier or what?
I can tell because compared to the manga and the 1989 original anime, Ranma's female bust is now hidden by a more baggier shirt.
And this is not my criticism but rather by people who are concerned or already raging at JAPAN's Increased censorship policies not just in broadcast but also Uncut Physical Media.
Turns out Smash Bros Creator MASAHIRO SAKURAI is not alone when it comes to RAGING against a Censorship bureau...
Yes, I read up on these before hand so it's nice to be prepared so you don't get shocked from the very beginning.
Of course, why isn't RUMIKO TAKAHASHI venting at those Censorship policies in the same way MASAHIRO SAKURAI vented his frustration with CERO's policies when they refused to put MAI SHIRANUI in Smash, much to his closeted chagrin, is a story to be told another time.
Oh well, at least Ranko, AKA Ranma-Chan, keeps her feminine figure when she's in form-fitting attire or.... you know....
Sorry this review ended up being longer than it was for my SCOTT PILGRIM review back in 2023.
I was in a state of anxiety back then, and the post was originally a Maverick Quickie before I redesignated it to a Review Post.
But this review was planned as a proper review blogpost so that's the reason it warrants a full/long post with many paragraphs.
All in all, the Remake is as solid as the URUSEI YATSURA remake from 2022.
My only complaint is not towards the remake but rather NETFLIX's pricing.
I recently bought a new HISENSE 4K TV back in September and while my PS5 supports 4K out of the box since it's AMD RADEON APU is built for that, my 2 Device Plan only covers 1080P Full HD.
NETFLIX's pricing is going out of control.
I demand universal Video Resolutions for all device plans...
Similar to what Disney+, Paramount+, MAX, PEACOCK, AMAZON PRIME VIDEO, etc. are offering with their price plans regardless of device limits.
But regardless, I still recommend this anime to anyone regardless of familiarity to the 1987 Manga, 1989 Anime, it's OVAS, etc.
I'll be sure to do a follow up to the Anime once the NEKO-KEN, PHOENIX PILL, MOUSSE, HAPPOSAI, and UKYO arcs come into play, amongst others in 2025.
Stay tuned for Season 2 of the Ranma 1/2 Remake coming soon in 2025....
Hopefully before or during October...
