What do Computer Webcams and INOSUKE from DEMON SLAYER: KIMITSU NO YAIBA have in common?

They are both inspired by BAD COFFEE!!!!

First, lets start with the WEBCAM.

I mentioned in a previous post that the WEBCAM's development was not through an academic thesis like most computer inventions are but rather a Faculty's necessity for Caffeine but considering most CAMPUSES cheap out on materials, including COFFEE MIX, to most of the faculty at CAMBRIDGE, the Coffee tasted Terrible if it's not fresh.

So the monitoring of whether there's a fresh batch of Coffee was a necessity.

And then the WORLD WIDE WEB happened and suddenly, the part of watching a coffee pot was not limited only to a British University but rather to anyone in the world who had an internet connection.

And now for INOSUKE from DEMON SLAYER

Why does INOSUKE looks so angry here?

Is it because of all those DEMONS out there?

Yes but the real reason is because they spoiled his COFFEE!!!!

.....

In TAISHO ERA JAPAN of all ERAS!!!!!

.....

Ok that's just my joke but there's a meaning for this.

In the English Dub, Bryce Papenbrook, the voice behind INOSUKE,

He's an avid fan of Coffee and he was surprised that he won the role of the Man wearing the Boar Mask.

At first, he felt that he was gonna voice the character using his fun voice he uses for Comedic characters like he did in the past

(Think MASAMI in DURARARA or MELODIAS in SEVEN DEADLY SINS.)

but without warning, he pushed the wrong button on the Coffee Machine and what was supposed to a nice 6oz pour, it spat out a meager 1oz cup of sludge.

Unaware of the error, he drank it and....

WRETCHED!!!!

Sorry for using this image of DENJI from Chainsaw Man but you can't expect me to fly from Vancouver to Los Angeles just to photograph BRYCE's reaction to bad coffee.
Plus, even I don't think DUB Actors approve of the PAPARAZZI anyway.

But the reaction to bitter coffee is palpable.

Maybe that's why people put Sugar in their Coffee, even if milk is not enough.

Somehow the people at CRUNCHYROLL loved BRYCE's reaction to his COFFEE error so much that they allowed BRYCE to use that reaction to COFFEE as the vocal template for Inosuke.

Helps that Inosuke wears a Boar Mask so Lip-Sync isn't much to worry about.... unless Gestures still are crucial to an anime dub since Inosuke makes a lot of Gestures to make up for the lack of Lip Sync.

And Bryce has mentioned that he actually drinks that exact coffee sludge in order to get into character because if INOSUKE is gonna genuinely sound ANGRY & CAFFIENATED, he must drink coffee.

As for my Coffee intake, I usually have a 6oz pour into my cup as well and I have that with Milk. I actually don't put any sugar in my Coffee. I just prefer bitter coffee with a touch of milk.

As a matter of fact, I haven't had sugar in my coffee for about 11 years as of this writing.

Nowadays, I prefer MAXWELL HOUSE Coffee.

Don't ask me why I prefer MAXWELL HOUSE!

I just prefer it for it's fancier taste.

There's another brand called FOLGERS

I tried FOLGERS several times in the past,

and it tastes like SHIT to my tongue!!! BLECH!!!

How so?

Ever drank Coffee while under the effects of PAXLOVID during the Pandemic?

I never had Paxlovid during the pandemic as I just have my MODERNA shots, but I heard that the effects of the medication has side effects to your coffee..... according to CLINT BASINGER from LGR.

The Oldest Anime ever: NAMAKURA GATANA, aka The Dull Sword

While not the very first Anime made in Japan, it's certainly one of the oldest to ever be preserved.

This is NAMAKURA GATANA, which translates to THE DULL SWORD, a 1917 silent anime created by JUN'ICHI KOUCHI.

It tells the story of a foolish self-appointed samurai, really a ronin, who foolishly purchases a Dull Katana from an old Merchant.

The film then follows said Ronin trying to test out his new Katana.

but has issues trying to attack random townspeople with it.

Due to the way the Katana is animated, one can assume that it doesn't look dull but rather it's just messing around with Ronin-San himself.

This is a fascinating look at one of the earliest pieces of anime to be preserved for the masses.

It was thought to be lost to time but around July or August 2007, it was rediscovered by film historian MATSUMOTO NATSUKI at an Osakan antique shop while also looking for another film which was KITAYAMA SEITARO's URASHIMA TARO from 1918.

The film would be restored in 2008 to commemorate it's discovery

At first glance, the short anime doesn't even have the aesthetics of today's presentation of anime.

That's because the film predates the distinct Visual Art tropes associated with today's anime but hey, just like with Western Animation, Anime had to start somewhere.

You can't expect everything to be fully formed overnight. It doesn't work that way.

At first glance, the cels move around as if they were a puppet-rigged or cutouts but considering this was 1917, everything is done on acetate cels.

After THE DULL SWORD, anime would evolve over the better part of the 20th century.

Evolving into the Tezuka Produced works like

ASTRO BOY,

KIMBA THE WHITE LION,

DORORO(The original version that is),

later into the more well known works such as

DRAGON BALL Z,

NEON GENESIS EVANGELION,

MOBILE SUIT GUNDAM,

YAMATO,

POKEMON,

etc.

And here we are with the likes of newer works such as Demon Slayer.

Forgive how yellow the print has become but that's the reality of trying to preserve nitrate film.

Filmstock deteriorates over time so there's not much we can do. That also is the reason we saw dust and scratches on the screenshots of THE DULL SWORD.

Did I mention that the film was rediscovered in 2008?

Maybe storage is what caused the nitrate film to deteriorate.

Fortunately, it's been scanned with a scanner years ago so we the viewers can marvel with awe at how far we've come with anime since the 1910s.

Speaking of which, Did you know Demon Slayer may be set in the late 1910s?

After all, Demon Slayer is set during the TAISHO Period which is between 1912 to 1926 so I'm open to opinions what year the manga/anime is set in.

You decide if it's 1910s or 1920s when Demon Slayer is set.
