DOUG some reason has Three Halloween episodes.
And it's split between both the Nickelodeon and Disney Series.
For this edition of DOUG & Halloween posts, I'll do a blogpost about the three Halloween Episodes broadcast for DOUG between 1991 to 1999.
The first we'll discuss is probably the most famous of all:
First broadcast on Nickelodeon on October 30 1993.
This was the first Halloween episode of DOUG and the second to be a full HALF-HOUR long episode after the season 1 episode DOUG BAGS A NEEMATOAD back in August 18 1991.
This was one of the attempts to bring DOUG's imagination and his bragging rights to be a real-man into full circle.
But in order to create something different to differentiate from the competition is to have the character go to a Haunted House called BLOODSTONE MANOR.
Just so he can prove to Roger that he's a REAL MAN!
There are many gags to Marvel at.
First is a personal favorite of mine:
Roger hiding his head underneath his Leather Jacket, pretending to be decapitated.
other's include this somewhat ominously disconcerting face made by Patti's father CHAD when he tells Doug and Skeeter the haunting tales of the missing participants of Bloodstone Manor.
Others include this bit where Skeeter tells the story of how BloodStone Manor was founded, complete with some wonderful lighting to set the mood.
Though I would have preferred if Skeeter would have impersonated Rod Serling or Alfred Hitchcock during that particular moment.
At least Skeeter saved his ROD SERLING shtick for 1996.
You know what, here's some more screenshots which I procured from my AMAZON DVD which I ripped the contents using VLC PLAYER's Convert Tool.
Also, I found out something very interesting.
I read BILLY COORE's CAROLINA CIRCLE CITY Blog and I found out that in October 1994, he went to a CAMELOT MUSIC at the former CAROLINA CIRCLE MALL and bought an Orange VHS Tape featuring a myriad of then-current at the time Nicktoons Halloween Specials.
DOUG's HALLOWEEN ADVENTURE was among one of them on the tape.
Little do DOUG and friends know that behind the scenes at VIACOM, a movie deal fell through after VIACOM acquired PARAMOUNT PICTURES which therefore froze JUMBO's budget, pissed off JIM, and a sale was underway which interfered with the fictional ASN Network......
WHOOPS!!! I'M OFF AT A TANGENT.
Where was I? OH YES!
Next we have...
First broadcast on ABC on October 26 1996
After a few rough starts with this Brand Spanking New! revival of DOUG at...
The Disney Afternoon, (It predated ONE SATURDAY MORNING by a year)
What with the older fans and stuff,
Then came this Halloween special.
So what's the plotline of this half-hour episode?
Beebe Bluff Middle School(Aka Bluffington Middle School or KOOL SKOOL) has traded in their Halloween festivities for a Football game against BLOASTBURG.
But the main story is really about DOUG trying to prove that his best friend Skeeter is not the infamous Bluffington Vampire.
All because of Connie developing an obsession for Gossiping.
Connie's actions prove damaging not only for Skeeter...
But also for the School's Band Teacher BOB FORT.
MR. FORT is Beebe Bluff Middle School's Band Class Teacher, who according to the 1997 Disney Series' Production Bible, is sort of the General Patton of the Faculty.
I always think of this guy as being more of a PHYS ED Teacher instead of a Band Teacher...
Just so he can give COACH BUZZCUT from BEAVIS AND BUTTHEAD,
And COACH MCGUIRK from HOME MOVIES
a run for their money. But MR. FORT lost the PHYS ED position to COACH SPITZ who transferred from Bluffington Elementary to Beebe Bluff Middle School in-between the Nick and Disney Series just because the Bluffington School Board can't afford to hire another new Gym Teacher for their then new School Property.
In this version, Coach Spitz now sounded like a got sick from his own spoiled tomatoes instead of sounding like a strict MR. PIPE from Ren & Stimpy which hilariously resulted in his students taking him less seriously.
Doesn't even matter though as Mr. Fort likes his position as Band Teacher and would go through great lengths to humiliate his hated rival BARON VON WERDERBERGER,
all because the Baron swapped out Fort's Musical Sheet back in their school days.
But yeah, this Episode has many things that's still befitting a Halloween Special:
The Scooby-Doo Parody as the episode's cold opening
With a few twists:
English Literature teacher EMILY KRYSTAL dresses like a dominatrix
Then she reads DRACULA,DOUG suffering his first Nightmarish Double Dream,
Doug playing the latest of Fighting Games such as...
UNIVERSAL STUDIOS' HORROR KOMBAT
This game is available exclusively for NONTENDU ULTRA-32.
??????
What happened to his SUPER PRETENDO from the Nickelodeon Series?
He got rid of it because it cost him his Juicy A+ from Mrs. Wingo.
So in 1996, DOUG got a new Console despite sharing a Similar Game Controller.
And yes, the NONTENDU ULTRA-32 name is a parody of the Nintendo 64, the 32-Bit era of Video Games, and the fact that despite being a true 64-Bit Console thanks to it's 93.75MHz NEC R4300 CPU, N64 games could only run 32-bit instructions.
Yes, there are jokes that can make you laugh.
The Double Dreams nightmare,
Skeeter unknowingly scaring the Bejesus out of everyone in the Cafeteria,
Yes I used the Nematodes joke but only because I’m still at heart a SpongeBob fan.
Roger's failed attempt to to melt Skeeter by using finger crucifixes
Roger making a lame-joke about being the SCARED KNIGHT.
& my personal favorite and most meta moment,
Roger claiming to have bought the latest(At least for 1996) in Vampire Repellent Products.
Then Connie pulls something out of his duffel bag
If the above liner joke fell flat,
the real joke is that Roger's underwear has images of his original Nickelodeon series Haircut.
It looks like his mother EDWINA KLOTZ submitted the wrong photos to the NYC designers but at least her mistake still makes us Nick Series Elitists happy.
Sometime around 1997, this episode, alongside several others, would eventually get the BOOK TREATMENT by both Disney Press & Scholastic.
Yes, the same people that would finally publish JIM JINKINS and JOE AARON's long-gestated 1984 book DOUG'S GOT A NEW PAIR OF SHOES,
Though like I said in previous posts, it necessitated a name change and update of artwork.
Finally, we have NIGHT OF THE LIVING DOUG'S
First broadcast on......OCTOBER 31 1998.
The only Halloween special that I know of that was literally broadcast on Halloween like it was intended to......
Unless you count the few SIMPSONS' TREEHOUSE OF HORROR episodes that did air on OCTOBER 31 like they were intended to do.
The episode plays out more of a Disaster Dominos/Chew Toy fodder for DOUG,
First, his baby Sister DIRTBIKE destroys his LUCKY DUCK MONSTER Costume,
(Which for some viewers, creates a continuity snarl because Dirtbike wasn't born until Christmas 1996. So this episode implies it takes place during when DOUG and friends were already in the 8th grade in 1997.) (That's also why I don't have any screenshots of Dirtbike destroying the costume.)
Then Skeeter's family ignores the doorbell,
JUDY refuses to help out DOUG with costume choices.
Doug's bike has a flat tire at the worst possible moment,
Mr. Dink's Machines malfunctions at the worst possible time,
Forcing Doug to run to the Costume Shop.
Roger is being his 1998 rich Jerkass self as usual, And he refuses to let DOUG in his Limo
Don't worry. Starting on November 1 1998, ROGER got sent to detention.
anyway,
Doug gets to the costume shop but it closes
and to top it off, Doug's favorite Ice Cream flavor BUTTERY BRICKLE gets....
DISCOUNTINUED!!!!
Happy Halloween INDEED.
Now don't send that sarcasm to SHELDON COOPER or PETER FRAMPTON
for the love of nematodes.
Midway into the episode, DOUG notices his friends acting like him, complete with things like
Beebe acting like DOUG when she writes on her d...... er.... JOURNAL.
Guy Graham claiming DOUG submitted a cartoon
Patti getting annoyed about so many love letters being stuffed in her locker.
All culminating in these sequences where everybody morphs into him.
Although there's another DOUG Halloween Special, that was a Disney Press BOOK released in 1998 so it doesn't count as I mostly focus on Animated Media on this Blog.
But if you think it should count, let me know in the comments and I'll update this post when the time permits.
I think people are going to prefer the NICKELODEON HALLOWEEN SPECIAL mostly due to the whole....
DOUG TRYING TO PROVE HE'S A REAL MAN plotline amongst other things,
Billy Coore's CAROLINA CIRCLE MALL Story,
And of course, BILLY WEST.
And for once, I applaud you all.
Now if only PARAMOUNT hadn't decided to remove NICKELODEON's DOUG from PARAMOUNT+ but apparently the current brass under DAVID ELLISON has no faith in the ABSOLUTE ORIGINAL NICKTOON,
And no, the SKYDANCE merger was not responsible as the removal predated the merger by seven to eight months prior.
But even then, I don't trust SKYDANCE with the IP even if ELLISON decides to decide to bring it back because trust can be a difficult thing in these hard times.
(I still stand with Stephen Colbert)
So until SKYDANCE decides to LEASE THE STREAMING RIGHTS to DISNEY+ or TUBI,
Just go to ARCHIVE.ORG and look for any DVD rips
or AVERMEDIA/ELGATO screen captures of the Nick episodes before they were removed off PARAMOUNT+ in DECEMBER 2024.
Yes my DISNEY LEASE comment might by controversial but at this moment,
THE MOUSE HOUSE would be a better fit for the streaming rights of the Nickelodeon Original.
After all, JIMMY NEUTRON is on DISNEY+ as well as the GREASE films due to Disney's licensing agreements with PARAMOUNT.... at least here in CANADA where I live in.
And the same can be said about the UNIVERSAL STUDIOS films I'm starting to see on the service since early October 2025.
I didn't mention NETFLIX due to the Warner Bros. Acquisition rumors and if NETFLIX did acquire WB if Paramount doesn't do it, this would create a copyright snarl since Disney owns the rights to the characters while Skydance still owns the rights to the original 52 episodes.
Oh and I made an update on the previous post where I found out that despite the fact that DISNEY STILL OWNS THE RIGHTS TO DOUG SINCE 1996,
CHIBIVERSE for the time being cannot use the characters due to the fact that the character was one of the THREE ORIGINAL NICKTOONS.
and I got a hunch that the CHIBIVERSE Production crew would prefer to use DOUG's NICK ERA outfit instead of his BRAND SPANKING NEW! outfit like his FUNKO POP figure uses.Plus, BEN SIEMON really wants BILLY WEST as the voice
and not THOMAS *FRANCIS MCREARY* LYONS.
Despite the legality dispute, BEN SIEMON still hopes DOUG FUNNIE will eventually join his fellow Disney Toons like LUZ NOCEDA, PEPPER ANN, DIPPER PINES, DOOFENSMIRTZ, ANNE BOONCHUY, etc.
But first is the negotiations with DAVID ELLISON, BOB IGER, KATHLEEN KENNEDY, JIM JINKINS, & BILLY WEST.
Then we'll see if DOUG will get his own CHIBI and PHILLIP J. FRY's Vocal Chords.
