What's with the identical Outfits in Cartoons?

Good Question but before that........

Yes, I know this is filler but on the previous post about Animation Acting, I was supposed to use some example animations I pulled from LinkedIn via my iPhone's Video Capture but the upload didn't work too well.

Dammit Blogger! It's bad enough that I had to put up with you sometimes failing to paste my photos before I refresh the page, now I can't have high res video uploads?

 (Sinewave and SMPTE Color Bars)

....... I'm calm now......FLAMINGOS ARE BIRDS.....

So while we wait for my other posts as they're now on the backburner until I deal with this video resolution nonsense, lets switch gears with a brand-spanking-new topic on why Cartoon and Anime Characters have to wear almost the exact same outfit each episode?

Yeah, It's a little weird and unrealistic since in real life and in live-action films, nobody wears the same outfit from one day to another until they've done a load of laundry but as explained by Doug Funnie in the 1993 episode "DOUG EN VOGUE" cartoons found a way to get around the Identical outfit problem by having a character's closet having an entire stockpile of outfits that look exactly the same.

My guess was DOUG must have seen David Cronenberg's THE FLY so he was inspired by Jeff Goldblum on having an entire closet dedicated to having identical sets of clothes. Of course, Doug had to change to a new identical set during the Disney Series but the core premise of his closet remains the same through and through.

So why do cartoons do this?

Well it's simple. A character does this because it's part of their daily apparel and part of how they are going to look in their everyday life. If they start changing outfits every week, it causes problems for the animators, the color artists, the layout artists, and of course, the executives who finance those cartoons and anime.

And it's a major pain in the ass to manage especially when viewers are so goddamn picky about consistency to the point if characters wear something different to their everyday attire, mixed opinions ensue.

In this day and age of maintaining budgets for your own cartoon or movie as well as appeasing the consistency obsessed fans, you simply can't afford to have your character change his/her outfit every week.

The closest to an actual cartoon to have characters wear a different outfit each episode has to be Totally Spies.
I've never seen this show in full but I might give it a try..... if I can get past the written dialogue for these girls but..... what the hey.

Totally Spies is pretty much the closest we can ever have to a piece of television animation where the characters change clothes from episode to episode.

And that's only when these three girls are in their civilian outfits.

Ah Shit... I knew I have an image of them in their Civilian Clothes somewhere but it's in my phone. Oh well, I guess I'll have to do the usual get my photos via ONEDRIVE transfers and update this post later.

I guess Evangelion can be considered another contender for having characters change their outfit but that doesn't always happen due to the angsty nature of the series as well as Japanese education's strict dress codes.
Yeah, due to dress codes, You'll always find characters like Shinji, Rei, and Asuka always wearing their same school uniform.... except for Toji.
Don't tell me where this Kansai Jock gets his special treatment from the school to be exempt from wearing his uniform?

And yes, I'm guilty of doing this with my own characters.
But the reality is, Hayden's going to have to be recognizable with the same sky-blue shirt over his orange one. The same goes for Megumi having that same red shirt regardless if she has jeans or a skirt.

It's because they're recognizable by their design and apparel.
It's only on Occasions when I decide to change a character's apparel but even then, it's only for a limited amount of time

This might be my last post for 2023 unless I find something else to cover as a Quickie but regardless if that happens, I want to wish you all a HAPPY NEW YEAR 2024.
