Porky's Breakdowns of 1939

No this is not a Maverick Quickie. This is just one of my few year end posts I want to do.

Besides, Maverick Quickies are a tad bit longer in the paragraphs but I just wanted to make a post.

I don't know how I got ahold of this but what the hell... here it is:

Porky's Breakdowns of 1939.

Breakdowns, the old school term for the Modern Outtakes you see in the DVDs of today's movies.

Nowadays, Breakdowns are more or less used for complimenting your actions.

Back then, you couldn't watch these due to things like the HAYS OFFICE and the fact that at the time, there was no such thing as home video

(TV was too new at the time and film was still on acetate film stock)

But things have changed since the HAYS OFFICE dissolved in 1968 and with the proliferation of the internet since the mid-1990s, we all have access to this wonderful blooper reel..... I'm sorry.... BREAKDOWN REEL...

So what's all the Hullabaloo about this cartoon?

Well for our Cuss-Obsessed viewers, It's the only time Porky Pig officially swears.

It all starts with Porky being filmed.... or animated hammering a nail.....

But then.....

OUCH!!!

"Oh Son of a B B
Son of a B B
Son of a B B"

"GUN!"
"HA HA HA!!! You though I was gonna say Son of a Bitch didn't ya HA HA HA!!!"

Again, this film was not shown to the public in 1939 due to the HAYS CODE so it was more or less an internal amusement for WARNER BROS. just so the filmmakers at the time can laugh at something for a change before starting the new year off.

By the way, the animator who animated the swearing Porky Pig is Rod Scribner who is often in the BOB CLAMPETT unit of animation at Termite Terrace.

After being laid off from Warner in 1953, Scribner would work on mostly commercials until he got work on both Ralph Bakshi's Fritz the Cat
And later two Peanuts films.

His most famous being SNOOPY COME HOME in 1972.

And for all you animation or film fans out there who want to see the reels yourself, I present to you a link to Warner Bros. Breakdowns reels from multiple years via the Internet Archive:

Keep in mind though most of the outtakes are from the Live-Action films. I thought I'd show you the reel with just the animation but I guess this will have to do.
