Which really is an IBM 360.... or what remains of the system before decades of hardware replacement.

By the way, these Simpsons screenshots are not from Disney+ but rather from my 2006 Season 9 DVD because I need my screenshots and Streaming always blocks captures.

As for taxes, I do file them early but not in the way Ned Flanders does. I have a guy I know from my Baptist Church who helps with my Tax Returns and sends them towards the Canadian Equivalent to Martinsburg's system.

Man, filing taxes sure have come a long way since 1998 according to the episode above. I just hope we don't have a firmware snafu like what happened in 2018.... otherwise I wouldn't want to hear the end of it.

Porky's Breakdowns of 1939

No this is not a Maverick Quickie. This is just one of my few year end posts I want to do.

Besides, Maverick Quickies are a tad bit longer in the paragraphs but I just wanted to make a post.


I don't know how I got ahold of this but what the hell... here it is:

Porky's Breakdowns of 1939.

Breakdowns, the old school term for the Modern Outtakes you see in the DVDs of today's movies.

Nowadays, Breakdowns are more or less used for complimenting your actions.

Back then, you couldn't watch these due to things like the HAYS OFFICE and the fact that at the time, there was no such thing as home video

(TV was too new at the time and film was still on acetate film stock)

But things have changed since the HAYS OFFICE dissolved in 1968 and with the proliferation of the internet since the mid-1990s, we all have access to this wonderful blooper reel..... I'm sorry.... BREAKDOWN REEL...

So what's all the Hullabaloo about this cartoon?

Well for our Cuss-Obsessed viewers, It's the only time Porky Pig officially swears.


It all starts with Porky being filmed.... or animated hammering a nail.....



But then.....



OUCH!!!

"HA HA HA!!! You though I was gonna say Son of a Bitch didn't ya HA HA HA!!!"


Again, this film was not shown to the public in 1939 due to the HAYS CODE so it was more or less an internal amusement for WARNER BROS. just so the filmmakers at the time can laugh at something for a change before starting the new year off.


By the way, the animator who animated the swearing Porky Pig is Rod Scribner who is often in the BOB CLAMPETT unit of animation at Termite Terrace.

After being laid off from Warner in 1953, Scribner would work on mostly commercials until he got work on both Ralph Bakshi's Fritz the Cat
And later two Peanuts films.

His most famous being SNOOPY COME HOME in 1972.

The Real Winners of 2023 Animation

To be honest, 2023 certainly wasn't really a great year for animation....

I felt too inclined to do this year-end post that's not a Maverick Quickie but I didn't do something like this when my Blog used to be in my WIX website so that's going to change right the F now!



I've compiled what I think are the real winners of 2023's animation scene.

For starters, we have MY ADVENTURES WITH SUPERMAN.



Holy Shit, I didn't expect this to be one of the best diversions away from what executives were trying to mandate on their artists but it certainly wasn't the first.

This may be one of the best iterations of Superman to appear on the animation scene. 

My guess it's mostly the story and of course the redesign and retouched personality of Lois Lane who for some reason became the breakout star of the show but for me, it's the art style. It's a nice change from all that puppet-rigged bullshit that's still permeating the 2D animation industry but Superman really does subvert all those expectations of what you can get artistic-wise.

When I look at a show like this, It really should be a figurehead for telling executives at their faces that ANIME IS THE FUTURE OF ANIMATION WORLDWIDE!!!!

Even though it doesn't look the part with it's TV-PG rating, the art style is a dead-giveaway that this version of Superman is meant for adults which explains it's place in ADULT SWIM.


The Season 3 finale of THE OWL HOUSE


No, I haven't watched OWL HOUSE in full......yet. But I have paid attention to the production scene.

A lot of us viewers are kind of still mad at Disney's executives for screwing over Dana Terrace thinking that Owl House is not a fit for the company when in fact it really was since the show had huge potential but come on, executives should not have the right to screw both creators and the fanbase like that.

I won't spoil the rest of OWL HOUSE but the final season follows our protagonist going back to the Boiling Isles for a final battle with a mastermind.... again, I need to rededicate my time to watch this show so forgive my wax-philosophical. Once I binge-watch from beginning to end, I'll provide a new update on a 2024 post but aside from behind the scenes turmoil, this has to be the best ending to a tv series with a more serialized storyline and a good love story for both Luz and Amity.


Scott Pilgrim Takes Off (AKA Scott Pilgrim: The Anime)


I already did a post about this show back in November 23 2023 but need I say more about this show?

Unlike with Superman and Owl House which I have praised but haven't watched yet, I did actually watch the first episode of Scott Pilgrim but that was because I needed something to occupy myself while I was upgrading my PC's Graphics Card. The idea of diverting away from the Source Material may take some getting used to but regardless, Scott Pilgrim takes off is one of the best pieces of animation to date because instead of Puppet-Rigs, the creative team wisely chose to outsource half the production and the entire animation to SCIENCE SARU in Tokyo, Japan and I have said before, ANIME IS THE FUTURE OF WORLDWIDE ANIMATION.

Guillermo Del Toro's Pinocchio
Yes, I know this film was from December 2022 but I decided to put it here because as far as I know, Disney's Live-Action Remake of Pinocchio was terrible so Del Toro managed to right a wrong and release his own STOP-MOTION version of it. And to make things better, he placed the setting of the film in FACIST ITALY so if you haven't watched this amazing flick, prepare for scenes where the titular puppet has to fight Mussolini.

But really what makes me want to praise this film even more is Guillermo Del Toro's immortal words about his view of Animation:


Great choice of words Del Toro. 
If only the animation studios and the Academy were to listen to your words then the industry wouldn't be in the mess are in now.... sigh.....

The Super Mario Bros. Movie
This film absolutely triumphed over all odds and became one of the biggest successes of this year after mixed opinions arose over Chris Pratt casting. 

Criticisms against Chris Pratt aside, this was a rather unexpected hit for a film based on Nintendo's property and one to actually succeed as an American Produced film when most other film/tv properties from based on Nintendo I.P that succeeded are either from the Pokémon or Kirby Franchises.

But the real star of the film is BOWSER.

I never expected Jack Black to be the perfect Bowser but he sure nailed the performance of his character, especially with how he handles Bowser trying to suppress his rage as well as his performance of Bowser when his rage explodes...

But mostly what people are going to remember Bowser for is his song PEACHES which became an unexpected hit in the music scene....
Makes sense since Jack Black is a musician after all.

While I didn't watch the film in theaters when it came out, I did watch it on Computer Monitors at my local London Drugs and I may get the chance to watch it in full on Netflix since they added it to the catalogue on December 3 2023.

Nimona
I have heard about this film and reading about it on LinkedIn. 
I haven't seen it yet but it's sure bound to be a blast. Yet it's CGI but I really dig the cel-shaded visuals to properly convey that EYVIND EARLE aesthetic.

From what I heard, I was almost shelved due to Disney folding Blue-Sky Studios and demanding the film not be released under their umbrella...... 

GODDAMNIT BOB CHAPEK.....

Fortunately, the film was rescued by Netflix. 
I admit, just like you viewers, I may be critical of Netflix's recent treatment with animation on their own platform but compared to Zaslav's attitude towards Warner's own property, Netflix did a marvelous job at finally giving this film the release it deserved as well as the acclaim it brought.



Disney's One Upon a Studio

While I wasn't impressed with how the company bungled it's centennial with WISH amongst other things in the company, I'm more impressed with this short film they made where Disney Characters take a tour of their parent company during closing hours in an effort to properly celebrate 100 years of the Company.

To me, I like how they managed to bring back many of it's older 2D Animated characters in their original hand-drawn form which is actually necessary in order to mingle with both their CGI and Live-Action co-stars.

And get this, no WACOM CINTIQS were used during the creation of the 2D animated scenes. All 2D animation was done on Pencil and Paper before being transferred to Toon Boom Harmony.

How's that for authenticity.



Speaking about former Disney animators, How about Andreas Deja's MUSHKA
Andreas Deja managed to strike gold with this heartwarming tale about a 1970s Ukrainian Girl's affection for her pet tiger but when biology strikes like a day for the tiger, she must chose whether to keep her pet or set him free.

A story this heartwarming, especially during the ongoing Ukrainian Crisis, can only be told as an independent film and Andreas Deja chose the right path.


And to end this Award for the year, how about a web cartoon:
THE AMAZING DIGITAL CIRCUS

This took me by surprise. Normally a YouTube cartoon often doesn't get this kind of recognition due to other Youtubers such as AVGN, Nostalgia Critic, Gamers Nexus, LGR, JAYZTWOCENTS, etc often getting recognition but THE AMAZING DIGITAL CIRCUS is just an excellent premise for a promising series about being trapped in a VR world that I could not pass this up.

As of now, it's only one episode but It's free to watch on YouTube so check it out.

So while 2023 was rough for all of us, at least I can close this year with positive thoughts and move on to a better 2024 with better expectations.

I really wanted to cover Elemental, The Boy and the Heron, Captain Laserhawk, TMNT Mutant Mayhem, Pokémon Horizons, just to name a few. 

But just like with jobhunting, competition is pretty high.......

What's with the identical Outfits in Cartoons?

Good Question but before that........

Yes, I know this is filler but on the previous post about Animation Acting, I was supposed to use some example animations I pulled from LinkedIn via my iPhone's Video Capture but the upload didn't work too well.

Dammit Blogger! It's bad enough that I had to put up with you sometimes failing to paste my photos before I refresh the page, now I can't have high res video uploads?

So while we wait for my other posts as they're now on the backburner until I deal with this video resolution nonsense, lets switch gears with a brand-spanking-new topic on why Cartoon and Anime Characters have to wear almost the exact same outfit each episode?

Yeah, It's a little weird and unrealistic since in real life and in live-action films, nobody wears the same outfit from one day to another until they've done a load of laundry but as explained by Doug Funnie in the 1993 episode "DOUG EN VOGUE" cartoons found a way to get around the Identical outfit problem by having a character's closet having an entire stockpile of outfits that look exactly the same.

My guess was DOUG must have seen David Cronenberg's THE FLY so he was inspired by Jeff Goldblum on having an entire closet dedicated to having identical sets of clothes. Of course, Doug had to change to a new identical set during the Disney Series but the core premise of his closet remains the same through and through.

So why do cartoons do this? 

Well it's simple. A character does this because it's part of their daily apparel and part of how they are going to look in their everyday life. If they start changing outfits every week, it causes problems for the animators, the color artists, the layout artists, and of course, the executives who finance those cartoons and anime. 

And it's a major pain in the ass to manage especially when viewers are so goddamn picky about consistency to the point if characters wear something different to their everyday attire, mixed opinions ensue.

In this day and age of maintaining budgets for your own cartoon or movie as well as appeasing the consistency obsessed fans, you simply can't afford to have your character change his/her outfit every week.

The closest to an actual cartoon to have characters wear a different outfit each episode has to be Totally Spies.
I've never seen this show in full but I might give it a try..... if I can get past the written dialogue for these girls but..... what the hey.

Totally Spies is pretty much the closest we can ever have to a piece of television animation where the characters change clothes from episode to episode.

And that's only when these three girls are in their civilian outfits. 

Ah Shit... I knew I have an image of them in their Civilian Clothes somewhere but it's in my phone. Oh well, I guess I'll have to do the usual get my photos via ONEDRIVE transfers and update this post later.

I guess Evangelion can be considered another contender for having characters change their outfit but that doesn't always happen due to the angsty nature of the series as well as Japanese education's strict dress codes.
Yeah, due to dress codes, You'll always find characters like Shinji, Rei, and Asuka always wearing their same school uniform.... except for Toji.
Don't tell me where this Kansai Jock gets his special treatment from the school to be exempt from wearing his uniform?

And yes, I'm guilty of doing this with my own characters.
But the reality is, Hayden's going to have to be recognizable with the same sky-blue shirt over his orange one. The same goes for Megumi having that same red shirt regardless if she has jeans or a skirt.

It's because they're recognizable by their design and apparel.
It's only on Occasions when I decide to change a character's apparel but even then, it's only for a limited amount of time

Animation Acting: Disney Acting and the essential principles you can keep. + Slip Ups by competitors

The more older your get, the more you crave things that are in your ball park.

That's the mentality I've seen in generations that grow up. They crave things with more spice, more gusto, more..... well.... everything.

And that includes acting. 

But what about Cartoon Acting? 

Well the thing is, cartoon acting is more or less 75% generic acting.


I did a post back in February 2023 on my two cents on Cartoon Acting but that was truncated into a rambling about why I prefer live-action acting.

But hey, It's New Years 2024 so Let's do a post about cartoon acting based on a Company.

And today's topic is DISNEY ACTING.

This style of acting is more or less based on the fierce belief by animators and historians that you have to use all 12 principles of animation to make it into the realm of anything animated.

The reason for this style of acting being mandatory at Disney and some other studios is because of the age old belief held by both Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston saying that cartoon acting can't reach the subtleties and presence of live-action acting.

And really, I don't blame them. Cartoon Acting certainly can't reach the subtleties but you can make do with inspiration from Live-Action acting if you take the effort.

But where are my manners, Lets see what principles are used for this style of acting that seems to be favored by the industry for some reason.

1. SQUASH AND STRETCH

2. ANTICIPATION

3. STAGING

4. STRAIGHT AHEAD VS POSE TO POSE

5. FOLLOW THROUGH/OVERLAPPING ACTION

6. SLOW IN AND SLOW OUT

7. ARCS

8. SECONDARY ACTION

9. TIMING

10. EXAGERATION

11. SOLID DRAWING

12. APPEAL


12 Principles of animation my ass. I've read many stories about how certain animators would rather truncate the 12 principles into what they feel is essential but the way I see it, they truncate the 12 principles to fit whatever style they use for their animations. 

To me, I believe in this thing called Animation Principle Truncation where you cherry-pick which principles are the most essential to your art style.

I'll give you my results at the end some other time but to say that using all principles is a waste of your own time and talents can be both a kick to the nads and an understatement.

Back in 2009, Disney Animator Will Finn posted this article on his blog about truncating your essential principles. Here's the Link:

John Kricfalusi also read that article but he was sort of flabbergasted by Finn's remarks about some things he said about truncating principles that it he eventually decided to compare that sentiment to Roger Ramjet Cartoons.

While I can do away with Squash and Stretch, Follow Through, and Overlaps since those are too distracting for my own tastes, Will Finn should have retained inbetweens and antics.... though I'm mixed on both.

Antics in general are for the more cartoony aspects of your work but they way I see it, it's overused, even in CGI because we've come so far and most animators who kiss the feet of executives still think it's still got a chance to entice the folks.

Thing is, Antics are sort of downplayed by Disney and Dreamworks by this point. They still do it but not when you're aiming for psuedo-realism so that leaves Sony Pictures and Illumination as the only modern CGI studios that encourage more antics in their animations.

For me, I can't even grasp antics properly even though I somewhat do it. It's even used in my SHASTA RUN animation I've done in Lasalle College.


Now as for inbetweens, I'm more mixed on that. Inbetweens are nice if you want to smooth out the action but not every scene is going to be inbetweened.

And as far as I know, Most Anime don't touch it since they always lower down the frames for character actions that aren't a fight scene.

So for example, This scene from Dagashi Kashi has Hotaru cooling her spicy lips with her hands. The action of cooling your lips is already executed perfectly by just having Two up and down motions of the hands so Inbetweening the hands with more frames just won't cut it because not only would that look out of place for a comedic anime but it would cause the budget to overshoot.

Now don't get me wrong. Anime still does some inbetweening but that's mostly for fight scenes or if it's a big movie like AKIRA.


But where are my manners, I need to get back into topic about Disney Acting. And good thing too. Brer Rabbit's been gesturing to me that I need to talk about the hand mimes

To me, Disney Animator's obsessions with Hand Miming to the dialogue needs to simmer down. I've seen so many hand mimes in Disney Cartoons New and Old that it's distracting me from looking at the one important thing in cartoons: THE FACE.

To tell you the truth, Nowadays if I wanna see Hand Miming in the media, I can just look at THE 8-BIT GUY'S YouTube videos since it works so much better than in Cartoons.



The Hand Pantomime thing is an old stand by that has dated all the way back to when Cartoons were without Sound but for some reason, Disney still believed the hand pantomimes can still work in today's cartoons and that's why I've seen characters like Bernard, Lumiere, etc use this gesture so many times. 

It's since been downplayed in later parts of the Renaissance but it still creeps up. 

Animators like Ralph Bakshi, Mike Judge and Danny Antonucci also criticize the use of Disney Style Acting as not only overused but also archaic to the point they wonder why on earth our USA based animation houses still stick with this style of acting when most of the medium's intended audience are going to crave more.

Believe it or not, I was looking at this article on TV TROPES about this style of acting and I was surprised to discover that RUGRATS also discouraged this acting just because it's so unnatural for Babies to be acting like this.

I've also read that THE SIMPSONS also very hard to avoid this trope during the production of the Season 1 episode SOME ENCHANTED EVENING and it ended horribly for them when it was the first to be screen in 1989. No wonder James L Brooks said "THIS IS SHIT!!!!" and walked out.

The episode was promised it's retakes and aired on MAY 1990 as scheduled but it's not without it's slipups such as this Mrs. Botz Animation that looks a bit smooth and out of place in THE SIMPSONS and yet.... it looks more threatening.


So yeah, despite other animator's criticisms, they still always slip up.

I've seen my share of Ralph Bakshi flicks and despite him saying he dislikes Disney acting, he sometimes slips up. And this is more apparent from these screengrabs from WIZARDS' uber-famous THEY KILLED FRITZ scene.


Now as for whether or not this shows up in anime or not is up for debate but especially in Dramatic Anime like Cowboy Bebop, this is absolutely avoided due to emphasis on the drama and the realism that those anime demand. That and a lot of Japanese animators have gotten into loads of trouble with Otaku for trying to go all Disney or Warner Bros. on the acting.


So why am I making a post on Disney acting? Well I've been paying attention to Disney's performance in both the box office and critical reception and so far, it's not been good.

The critical reception is a mixed bag but the box office performance has overall abysmal to the point that the company is no longer in the Billion Dollar Club since all their films barely have reached the Billion dollar mark in the box office.

And no, WGA and SAG-AFTRA had nothing to do about it. It's just Bob Iger being.... well.... Bob Iger.

But on the other hand, at least he isn't as god-awful as Bob Chapek was so I could cut him some slack.

And Iger is still better than that asshole David Zaslav.....

(Somebody put an stick of ACME M80s in Zaslav's desk.... hehehehe..)

But back to topic. It's clear that the company had a real bad year for themselves that they hope to fix their wrongs in 2024 but only time will tell if they do that. I'm more concerned if Iger will keep up his promise to improve on the company because I read an article on Facebook that he's exhausted and I'm not going to lie, I'd too be exhausted if my company keeps up with flops to the point that I'd quit while I can.

Thing is though, I'm not an executive and I'm not a CEO of a company. But then again, considering my rage against executives and CEOS for not listening to viewers and artist, purging content, etc, I be glad to just be in the middle ground.

Anyhow, I hope the company bounces back in the New Year.

The Three Art Directors of Termite Terrace

If you've watched the Classic Looney Tunes cartoons of the 30s, 40s, 50s, and early 60s, you'll know that for every Looney Tune Cartoon, there is an art director with his unique style not just in the art but also with animation acting, character portrayals, etc.

They were all under one roof: Termite Terrace.

I can list almost every one of them but instead, I'll truncate them to the most well known of the classic era.


We have TEX AVERY


His take on Cartoons is exaggeration, fourth wall breaking, subversions....

Or to take TV TROPES's word for it, GO ALL OUT WITH CARTOONS.

His is also one where he appeals more towards adults.... at least for an era dictated by the Hays Office.

It's pretty Obvious the innuendos that Tex Avery loved to use in his shorts whether it be Warner or MGM really had an influence on Joe Murray's ROCKO'S MODERN LIFE as well as some other other cartoons.


Then we have BOB CLAMPETT.

This guy is my personal favorite... as well as John Kricfalusi's personal favorite as well.

What sets Bob Clampett from the other cartoonists in WB is his style of taking from other company's art and acting styles but tweaking them to make it his own. 

This is exemplified by his frequent use of the Squash and Stretch principles used by Disney and Fleischer and making it even wackier than it ever was. 

Fun Fact: Bob Clampett actually wanted to work at Disney and Disney wanted to hire him but that never happened due to part of Disney's upper brass being already filled with enough animators so Clampett instead went to Termite Terrace where he was Tex Avery's understudy.

After Avery left in the early 40's, The decade belonged to Clampett. He churned out the most famous of early 40's animation you can ever get at WB at the time and he wasn't fazed by all the WWII madness unfolding at the time.

Not even the War would prevent the rise of BUGS '"BIG CHUNGUS" BUNNY.

HEH HEH HEH HEH HEH

While people remember Bob Clampett for his Bugs Bunny Cartoons, admittingly, Bob himself disliked working on any cartoon featuring Bugs because he felt that if all he worked on are cartoons where Bugs antagonizes Elmer Fudd, he be falling into formula and Bob hated formula.

So for several years, Clampett had to animate a shitload of Bugs Bunny Cartoons and he had to devise ways to make Bugs' adventures less repetitive. He had his share of cartoons featuring other characters too and they are marvelous to look at.

But man oh man did Clampett get sick of the formulas that Warner was giving him. So at the peak of his creativity in 1945, he left the company but at least he did have one parting gift to us fans:
THE BIG SNOOZE released in 1946.

And now we get to what is considered Hollywood's most preferred animator alongside Tex Avery:
CHUCK JONES
I don't know why the industry prefers him over Clampett but I think it has something to do with his past as an animator who tried his damnest to imitate Disney's Silly Symphonies.

But after the success of THE DOVER BOYS, he then proceeded to follow in the footsteps of others such as Tex Avery and Friz Freleng.

The fact that after Avery and Clampett left Warner Bros, Jones pretty much took over many productions and characters of the franchise and made stories featuring them. Maybe that's why historians prefer to talk more about Jones instead of Clampett because he was with the studio the longest.

Another thing that defines Jones were his smug characters.
He was known for drawing characters with this smug face and most of them are Lummox characters with Stubbles, Big angular mouths, and deep voices with Brooklyn accents... which are most often performed by Mel Blanc.

I think the smug attitude fits more the Lummoxes than mainstays like Bugs Bunny because if attitude is your only defining trait, it makes your personality flat but of all the modern content featuring BUGS, they always pick the smug attitude.
 
Sort of why I prefer Clampett's Bugs over Jone's Bugs due to Clampett at least giving the rabbit...er..uh... WABBIT at least a sliver of personalities to choose from when the need arises.

So in essence, what I actually like from Jones are the Cartoons that either don't even feature Bugs or he has a minor role in them.

One of my favorites from Jones is FEED THE KITTY.
It's a rare example of Jones proving you don't need Smug attitude and you can write a story with emotion in hilarious ways.
By the way, the kitten's name is PUSSYFOOT, not CLEO as every animation history book prefers to call her.

Another is One Froggy Evening

and my personal favorite, even if it's a Bugs Bunny Cartoon
Transylvania 6-5000

Yes I know this cartoon was released at the tail-end of the Golden age of Looney Tunes but you can't go wrong with all that Abracadabra nonsense that makes me laugh so hard I almost split my stomach.

A lot of people know Chuck Jones also animated THE GRINCH

Anyhow, that's my blogpost about the three directors of Termite Terrace. 
It didn't plan out like I wanted but I just wanted to get the post done before the new year.

When I originally did this post, I teased about wanting to do a blogpost on TRANSYLVANNIA 6-5000. 

I eventually made good on my Promise and did the post on Halloween of 2024.
