AUTODESK is known for their MAYA Software for CGI Animation in the Industry while AUTOCAD is known in the MANUFACTURING industry for it's use in...... CAD work.
But before AUTODESK acquired ALIAS SOFTWARE,
AUTODESK had their own CGI software that is often overlooked when compared to MAYA or BLENDER nowadays.
3D Studio was the principal CGI software for AUTODESK until they bought ALIAS though 3DS and MAYA coexisted.
Anyway, what does this have to do with what I'm talking about?
Well, A Sample Animation was created by ROBERT LURYE who was hired by UNREAL PICTURES animate samples of a dance to demonstrate animation on WINDOWS NT computers running their software without holding back the hardware in any way imaginable.
To demonstrate further compatibility, he scanned a plastic baby doll, rigged it,
And let it boogie..
Little did AUTODESK or even ROBERT LURYE know that when they shared their low-res renders through EMAIL and through the 1995 Software Conference at SIGGRAPH that they inadvertently created one of the first(Probably not the very first) viral INTERNET MEMES that could spread as quickly as.........
Anyway.
The GIFs got spread across COMPUSERVE INTERNET FORUMS
alongside videos which often paired the baby with
The 1973 BLUE SWEDE song HOOKED ON A FEELING
(Better known by it's Caveman sounding starting lyrics OOGA-CHAKA)
North of CALIFORNIA where AUTODESK is located,
A 17 year old High School Student in BELLVUE, WASHINGTON
who goes by the name of ROB SHERIDAN
Decided to take the BABY through storm after finding himself enamored by the Dancing Infant's antics.
Using his pride and joy of a COMPUTER:
He created a HOME PAGE to share the BABY's antics on the INTERNET:
Not only did ROB wanted to share clips he got on his WEB SEARCHES but he also encouraged other CGI Artists(Mostly Freelance) to share their creations to him via EMAIL so that he can share them on his HOME PAGE.
Under the proviso that they're up to his standards that is considered AGE APPROPRIATE as He got in trouble with his HIGH SCHOOL TEACHERs over some of the clips he's shared.
So that meant videos like a...
are refused entry into his homepage.
are allowed to be in his website.
Due to the fact that pretty much everybody who wanted to get on the internet in the late 90s were limited to DIAL-UP for their INTERNET,And the fact that ROB SHERIDAN'S own DIAL UP Internet wasn't particularly great even back in the day,
Web traffic was pretty tame....
That was until DAVID E. KELLEY's decided to contact AUTODESK buy software from them, just to feature the BABY in his show ALLY MCBEALThe idea of the DANCING BABY appearing in ALLY MCBEAL was that he was meant to symbolize the title character's TICKING BIOLOGICAL CLOCK.
And ALLY eventually danced with the BABY in one episode
And with that, SHERIDAN's website soon SKYROCKETED in WEB TRAFFIC,
More than ROB's own INTERNET SETUP was willing to allow.
One a side note but still related to the baby:
A parody was also featured in the SIMPSONS via the DANCING JESUS WEBSITE
The later years were not kind for the baby and LITTLE BABY CHACHA soon faded into obscurity while other MEMES flourished.
In 2020,
An artist named JACK ARMSTRONG decided to revive the BABY for the new decade by TRACKING THE OLD FILES for the baby and....
Well I was under the impression he used BLENDER but as it turns out, he just used AUTODESK 3DS MAX which is.... rather fitting considering THE BABY's origins.
It's documented here:
ROB SHERIDAN has since moved on from the DANCING BABY meme that made him famous as he's since ventured on into other endevoursSuch as is work with NINE INCH NAILS & PEARL JAM.
As for why I mentioned that I've got an Important Announcement:
Yesterday, I just purchased 2 tickets for a round trip to ATLANTA, GEORGIA
(The second ticket is for my mother)
So I've got the travel plans for FEBRUARY 2027 taken care of.
