The Vancouver-EDs-The 25th Anniversary of Cartoon Network's Canadian Original

Forgive my bad pun but I wanted to do a Blogpost on a particular childhood favorite of a show of mine that is now over 25 years old, I watched this show nearly 20 years ago, but I also wanted the title of this post to be in the style of the episode names that the show uses..

That, and the fact that this show was made in Vancouver, BC. Which makes me very happy.

Anyway, here's a childhood favorite of many a 2000s kid born in the mid to late 90s:

This was Cartoon Network's only Canadian-Produced original cartoon.... at least in 1999 when it debut, It was created by Canadian Animator DANNY ANTONUCCI.

The show was born out of various things in Antonucci's career and his life.

For one thing, a lot of the stuff the EDs do are based on some of the things Antonucci dealt with during his Childhood growing up in TORONTO, ONTARIO.

Another, was other personal issues with his Career.

For one thing, he was not pleased with the state of Animation in North America when he started work at Hanna-Barbera in 1980.

After getting frusturated with the Industry's refusal to allow more Adult-oriented work in the mainstream as well as Executives only focus on existing I.Ps just so the studios can water everything down to MOM-Fodder,

Antonucci left Toronto. At first he wanted to move to Los Angeles but the situation was no better there, and he probably had some passport issues getting to the U.S from Canada so he instead moved to Vancouver in 1984 where he took several small jobs before being hired by MARV NEWLAND.

YES!!! THAT MARV NEWLAND....

The same MARV NEWLAND who made the cult classic short film:

BAMBI MEETS GODZILLA

Anyway, Antonucci worked within Marv Newland's animation company INTERNATIONAL ROCKETSHIP LIMITED

where Antonucci made his own cult classic animated short entitled:

LUPO THE BUTCHER

This solidified Antonucci as a man who's a firm believer in not only wanting animation to grow-up instead of being confined to the childish pigeonhole, but also be a firm believer of absolute full Artistic Control to the creator of said I.P.

After licensing Lupo to Converse for several commercials as well as make several bumpers for MTV, Antonucci created THE BROTHERS GRUNT for MTV but that show performed poorly and was eventually cancelled. Quite a blow for someone who wants to make Adult Animation and have a full auteur license.

As a result, he was reluctant to work on more big projects aside from Cartoon Sushi until he was dared by a friend of his to go back and make a cartoon for children.

This gave an epiphany to Antonucci where he felt that after the unceremonious failure that was The Brother's Grunt, Antonucci felt he doesn't want to be pigeonholed as the man who does strictly gross adult content.

Taking this dare with a handful of Sugar, metaphorically speaking, Antonucci accepted and started to draw 3 kids that serve as the basis for Ed, Edd, and Eddy.

Here's a fun fact:

Did you know Antonucci pitched ED, EDD N EDDY to Nickelodeon?

It's true.

But thankfully, that didn't happen because after dealing with almost 5 years of Nickelodeon's troubles with John Kricfalusi's behavior during production of REN AND STIMPY, the slime factory wanted to ensure they have half artistic control of content that's pitched to them.

Obviously Antonucci was firmly going to refuse to rescind artistic control so he instead faxed the pitch to Cartoon Network.

And believe it or not, Cartoon Network happily accepted Antonucci's request for his studio AKA CARTOONS to have total artistic control of the series.

And thus was born, A Canadian Produced original series for Cartoon Network.

ED, EDD N EDDY began it's run on Cartoon Network on January 4 1999,

about 4 months before SpongeBob made his debut on Nickelodeon.

But this blogpost is dedicated to the EDs of Peach Creek. Not an anthropomorphic Sea Sponge so let's get back into topic shall we.

"Yeah, Like what Dan the Maverick is saying, this blogpost is all about us.
Sorry SpongeBob."

The art direction is often referred to by Antonucci as a throwback to Animation from between the 40's to late 70s.

To keep his drawings alive while at the same time be more professional, he employs a line shimmering system where whenever the characters are standing still whether they are talking or not, the character's outlines would wiggle around.

I've heard some sources call this SQUIGGLEVISION where the line art shimmers as an attempt to showcase that the characters are alive.

Sort of like what's used in Comedy Central's DR. KATZ PROFESSIONAL THERAPIST.

But the difference is that unlike Dr. Katz, ED EDD N EDDY doesn't use Autodesk Animator Pro for the line-art. Nor does it use Digital Ink and Paint..... until Season 5.

What ED, EDD N EDDY used from Seasons 1 to 4 is traditional acetate cels.

But I digress,

I welcome the SQUIGGLEVISION comparisons since ED, EDD N EDDY was one of the very last new programmes to use Traditional Acetate Cels for it's animation.

I mean, SpongeBob was also one of the last new programme to use Acetate Cels but that eventually switched completely to digital ink and paint in Season 2.

ED, EDD N EDDY stuck to it's guns with staying with the traditional process.... at least until Season 5 when the show had no choice but to make the switch to digital coloring.

The closest competitor that still stuck with traditional cels to the very end was Disney's Doug but by then, that show was already on the decline with audiences alike so ED, EDD N EDDY was welcome to claim the crowd with it being a fresh new show in 1999 alongside FAMILY GUY, FUTURAMA, and SpongeBob.

And don't say THE SIMPSONS and KING OF THE HILL count on this list because they are a league of their own.

They began before the EDS so that's why.

6 year old me was entirely confused with why the Character's tongues were all different colors instead of pink or mahogany.

Oh Double D!!! Why are you hiding your tongue now!!!

Then I read some sources and as it turns out, the Technicolored Tongues are a result of the candy..... er... GOBSTOPPERS that the characters eat.

You ever had candy where the dye leaks and turns your tongue a different color? Antonucci wanted to capture that in animation.

Here's another fun fact:

Did you know that the character ROLF may be a caricature of Danny Antonucci?

"You talking to ROLF? Yeah sure, ROLF is based on Antonucci.
ROLF is also Antonucci's favorite character"

Well, that might be half true, ROLF.... pardon your third person though.

Antonucci stated that ROLF is based on his Italian Immigrant upbringing despite him being born a Canadian in Toronto.

The part of ROLF that Antonucci says is caricaturing him is actually based on his family which includes his parents and his cousins.

It's been a while since I watched this show.

Even to this day with 2003's Teen Titans, Ben 10, Adventure Time, Powerpuff Girls, Regular Show, and Steven Universe having come and shared the EDs fame, ED, EDD N EDDY is still a preferred favorite for 90s Cartoon Network Nostalgia alongside the likes of PowerPuff Girls, Dexter, Cow and Chicken, Johnny Bravo, Etc.

No other Cartoon can match the rousing success of the EDs....

Except for Teen Titans(2003) which I know people are going to say is superior to the EDs.

"We just came back from our fight with the EDs.
Don't tell Dan Martinez or Danny Antonucci that we won."

BEAST BOY! I heard your quip. But I promise I won't tell Antonucci what you and the others did to the EDS in your fight.

If you want to watch the entire series, MAX is your safest bet.

And Good thing WBD saw how important the EDs are for Cartoon Network that Zaslav and his legion of Executives gave the show it's permanent residence in MAX.

As much as I hate Zaslav with a burning Vengeance, I'm glad he didn't touch the EDs with his Tax-Write-Off fingers of Doom.

But still, I can't get MAX in Canada because of BELLMEDIA's stronghold in anything WARNER BROS. related when it comes to streaming.....

I guess I can just buy the entire series on iTunes but......

Looks like it's Internet Archive for me again....

I hear that Internet Archive is lovely this time of year.

Ranma 1/2 News

Well this is a surprise indeed.

I was hoping for some news about the Ranma 1/2 revival and here are some images and news coverage I've procured on the internet.

Unlike with the Urusei Yatsura 2022 Revival, the Ranma revival will not be animated by David Productions but instead by MAPPA.

Of course, just like with Urusei Yatsura, the art will still deviate a little away from Rumiko Takahashi's art just to suit the style by the art director but then again, the news of new Ramna content is fascinating on it's own right.

But what pleases me is the Return of some the Surviving Actors of the Japanese Cast.

For sure on who's confirmed to return:

Kappei Yamaguchi as Male Ranma,

Megumi Hayashibara as Female Ranma,

Noriko Hidaka as Akane Tendo,

Minami Takayama as Nabiki Tendo,

Koichi Yamadera as Ryoga Hibiki,

&

Rei Sakuma as Shampoo

Akio Otsuka will replace Ryunosuke Obayashi as Soun Tendo,

and Cho will replace Kenichi Ogata as Genma Saotome.....

while Kenichi Ogata will return as the new Narrator.

For sure, characters like Kuno, Happosai, Cologne, and Ukyo are going to have to be recast due to the deaths of their original actors....

Especially UKYO..... because I'm still torn over the death of Hiromi Tsuru even 7 years later....

The revival will premiere in Japan on October 5 2024.

Afterwards, the International Broadcast will be on Netflix.... so effectively, this makes the Ranma Revival a Netflix Original Anime.

No word on whether the Dub Cast from the 90s will return but considering Viz Media owns the international rights, I'm sure they will call on the likes of Richard Ian Cox, Venus Terzo, Kelly Sheridan, Michael Donovan, Miriam Sirois, Ian James Corlett, etc to return to their respective roles.

But here's my plea to Viz Media:

DUB THE REVIVAL IN VANCOUVER!!!! NOT LOS ANGELES!!!

A Bang Zoom Dub of Ranma 1/2 will not feel the same because of the lack of that Canadian touch to the voices.

I can let Bang Zoom slide scot-free with their dub of Yashahime but not Ranma.

Ranma's Netflix dub must be made Vancouver.

Through and through.

Even Ranma-Chan believes the Netflix dub should be made in Vancouver, BC.

But at least I'm very happy to hear that the surviving Japanese Cast is going to reprise their roles.

Anyway, see you all on October 5 and October 6 for more Ranma News.

My Childhood PCs+Evolution of my PC Usage.

Omaha and Teen Titans Posts are definitely on the backburner and pending posting but I refuse to let myself post another Maverick Quickie aside from the recent cat update so instead for filler, Let's take a look back my Childhood Computers I've had since... well... my early childhood...

And you can clearly see why I'm so obsessed with computers even to this day.

01. Compaq Presario 5477

That computer above was my very first Computer that I had.... or really my family bought.

And the kicker: It's evidence that I've been using computers since I was 1 year old.

The specs however weren't that great though. A Google Search for this model came up and it had:

Motherboard: Intel Socket 370 Micro-ATX

CPU: Intel Celeron Mendocino 500MHZ Single-Core

Memory: 64MB of Kingston PC100 DRAM

Hard Drive:13GB Western Digital Caviar HDD

Display: 17" Compaq MV520 CRT Monitor

Speakers: JBL Pro Speakers Included with Presario

Keyboard: Compaq Multimedia Keyboard Included with Presario

Mouse: Compaq 2-Button PS\2 Mouse included with Presario

Printer: Lexmark Z31 Inkjet Printer included with our Compaq Presario

Case: OEM Micro-ATX Case from Compaq

PSU: 250W Lite-On Power Supply

Operating System: Windows 98SE(OEM from Compaq)

My dad bought this computer. Honestly, I don't know if it was for work or the primary focus was just for getting into the internet but he bought it no matter what.

I had my share of fun with this machine even though my parents cherry-picked the software for me which was limited mostly just to edutainment software.

But there was this one game that came with our Compaq called INCOMING.

Unfortunately, that 500mhz Intel Celeron often refused to boot this game up.

And even when we managed to get this game running, Incoming ran poorly on our Compaq.

Plus, My dad didn't know of OPEN ARCHITECTURE at the time and thought the computers were locked in architecture just like the MACs are.

But I digress, I still had fun with this machine.

02. Vobis Highscreen Sky ATX

My Second Computer and a personal favorite of mine from Childhood.

My family had this from 2000 up until 2005 or so.

Again, Specs were balls.

Motherboard: Intel Socket 370 or GIGABYTE Socket A. Both ATX

CPU: Either a Pentium III or AMD Athlon but I don't know if it was over 1GHZ.

Memory: Going to say 128MB or 256MB of Crucial PC100 DRAM

Hard Drive: 30GB Western Digital HDD

Display: 17" Acer CRT Monitor at first. Then we switched to a 21" KDS CRT Monitor. Both were VGA Monitors.

Speakers: VTech Laser Juster Speakers.

Keyboard: Microsoft Multimedia Keyboard

Mouse: Acer-Branded Logitech 2-Button Emerald Green PS\2 Mouse

Case: OEM Mid-Tower ATX Case from Vobis.

Printer: Lexmark Z31 Inkjet Printer(Hold Over from Compaq Presario)

PSU: 300W Sparkle Power Supply

Operating System: At first Windows 95 OSR2 & then Windows 98SE.

While I have a lot of memories using this PC, again, my parents cherry picked my software and they were mostly just Edutainment so that meant no Unreal, no Rayman, and certainly no GTA in my household.

But this Computer has survived at minimum 4 moves across 4 houses in Vancouver.

I'm sure the computer ran on Integrated Graphics because I wasn't allowed to look at the back of the machine or even use a screwdriver during my Toddler years.

Sound probably was Integrated as usual but please don't ask if I had a Crystal Audio or an A3D Aureal Vortex chipset Built-In.

It had a Floppy Drive and a Zip Drive but my dad removed the Zip Drive at some point because it either caused some IRQ conflicts with the motherboard or the Zip Drive broke.

We didn't have a cover for that bay so he just covered that area with tape to prevent dust from getting inside the internals.

As seen below, we eventually replaced the Acer Monitor with this Massive 21" KDS Monitor that I've been talking about in my previous posts on Large Gaming Monitors.

but alas, this Computer eventually kicked the bucket when it's hard drive crapped out and gave us multiple errors on startup.

Aside from getting upset over losing this gem of a PC, at least it didn't succumb to the infamous capacitor plague, otherwise, the computer wouldn't even boot.

03. MDG Horizon 2400

My Windows XP machine from the mid-2000s until June 2011.

That MDG in the image above isn't mine.
This is what happens when I don't have proper closeup photos of my Computers or I do have photos but the image isn't bright enough.

The specs were:

Motherboard: Intel LGA 775 Micro-ATX Motherboard

CPU: LGA 775 Intel Pentium 4 Prescott 2.8GHZ

Memory: 4GB of Samsung DDR2 800 Ram

Hard Drive: 80GB Samsung HDD

Graphics: Mostly likely one with Integrated ATI Radeon

Display: 17" Samsung Syncmaster CRT Monitor we got with MDG Horizon.

Switched to a 19" ViewSonic LCD Monitor in 2009.

Speakers: Subwoofer Speakers included with PC

Keyboard: Microsoft Multimedia Keyboard

Mouse: Microsoft Intellipoint 3-Button USB Mouse (With USB to PS\2 Adapter)

Case: OEM Mid-Tower from MDG

PSU: 650W Thermaltake PSU

Printer: Lexmark Z816 Inkjet Printer included with our MDG Horizon

Operating System: Windows XP Home Edition

At one point, Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex(For Linux Test Purposes)

Notes: Went through several Keyboards with this machine. I also had a USB Webcam that I've used for some early YouTube Videos I made in the past but often at times, I mostly used it as my microphone.

If there's one Computer that I've used the most in my Childhood, it's gotta be this one. My mother actually purchased this Online using one of my Dad's Laptops but it was actually my dad Reuben Martinez who not only went to pick it up but also set up Windows XP and all out configurations.

As for software, At first, it was mostly Edutainment software but eventually I diversified my tastes.

I remember playing a Train Simulator,

Battleship Simulator,

A Dragon Spin Puzzle Game,

Creatrix,

A game where you play as a Polar Bear throwing Ice blocks to his penguin friend while avoiding Mad Pianos,

No, Not that Mad Piano!!!
And yes, you can trick the Mad Piano into getting stuck on a chair.

Later in it's service life, sometime in Late January of Early February 2009,
My dad thought it should be time I have this in my bedroom so I did and it's where I at one Point had a YouTube Account... which I won't talk further about.

But alas, all good things must come to an end. The machine eventually got infected with a Trojan Horse and despite valiant efforts, we couldn't save it.

The thing was then reformatted and stored away.

And then I switched to Laptops.

04:HP Pavilion Laptop

Sorry. No Photos. Doesn't matter since this was one of my Least Favorite Laptops.

Specs:

CPU: Intel Pentium 356M Haswell 2.5GHZ Dual-Core

Memory: 8GB Samsung DDR3 1333 SO-DIMM Ram

Hard Drive: 750GB Western Digital Blue HDD

GPU: Integrated Intel HD Graphics

OS: Windows 8.1

Later upgraded for free to Windows 10.

Go ahead! Make fun of my HP Pavilion! I don't care!

Only good thing was that I at least had a laptop that let me emulate my favorite consoles as well as use this for my art.

Oh and the Hard Drive wasn't bad. At 750GB, it was swell to have even in 2014.

And at least the Battery was detachable unlike with Today's Laptops.

I didn't know about holding the Power Button to hard-power-off so removing that battery and reinserting it really helped me win fights against my Pavilion.

05: Mid-2009 MacBook Pro

After the experience with my HP Laptop, I needed something MAC like since I was obsessed with them back in the day.

Specs:

CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo 2.26GHZ Dual-Core

Memory: 2GB DDR3 1066 SDRAM

GPU: Integrated NVIDIA Geforce 9400M 256MB

Hard Drive: 500GB HDD

Operating System: Mac OSX Mavericks

Say no more. I used this more for my art.

06. MSI GP62M 7RDX Leopard Laptop

It was the Pandemic but my Macbook Pro was too outdated for my software I needed for my studies... and I refused an AIR model so instead, I switched back to PCs and went for this MSI Laptop.

Specs:

CPU: Intel Core i7 7700HQ Kaby Lake 2.8GHZ Quad-Core

Memory: 16GB Crucial DDR4 2400 SO-DIMM Ram

GPU: Integrated Intel 630 HD Graphics & Nvidia GTX 1050 2GB Chipsets

Storage: 128GB Kingston M.2 SSD & 1TB HGST HDD

Keyboard: Built-In Steelseries Scissor-Switch Keyboard

                  Microsoft USB Wireless Keyboard

Mouse: Microsoft USB Mouse

              Logitech USB Wireless Mouse

Used this most for my College years between 2020 to 2022. Did fight with the Kingston SSD for it's low amount of memory.

Barring the May 1 2022 accidentally breaking of my OS, this thing is still swell.

PS: I still Own this laptop still to this day but I might have to say goodbye to this MSI and get a new laptop in the future. Who knows. Maybe another MSI Laptop.

Maverick Quickie-Cat Update July 2024

......Quickies.....

But this is focused on my cat MISO THE FELINE so I'll keep it brief.

Miso has had another visit to the Vet but this time, at a different clinic. Our usual had a change of staff and change of strategy so we had to switch clinics.

Anyway, I came back with news that Miso has had an infection on her mandible which was caused by her gingivitis.

But it doesn't end there.

It turns out Miso's been fighting this but her immune system is now on the fritz according to the veterinarian.

So now we're going to have to administer her dental spray on her teeth as well has give her the required medicine.

And don't think that this is going away because this symptom is for a life-time so that means I'll need to be at Miso's side the best I can.

.....

That's all I'm going to say. I've got until July 16 before the next visit to the Vet so we can see what's going on with Miso's health.

Sheesh. My bank card is in for a world of pain! (Metaphorically speaking).

How Disney's THE LION KING let PC Gaming evolve

In celebration of the 30th Anniversary of Disney's THE LION KING, Here's an interesting story:

Did you know THE LION KING single handedly allowed the next major evolution in PC Gaming?

It's true. And it all dates back to the Infamous December 1994 release of the Animated Storybook CD-ROM game.

Actually, it was Media Station's and COMPAQ's fault for all of this that lead to the creation of the most important API in all of PC Gaming.

You see, it was the harsh reality of fighting Expensive prices on Computers as well as System Requirements that many people simply couldn't afford despite 1993-1999 having the best economy.

December 1994 Compaq Presario Computers were hit the hardest with the worst of the Christmas rush.

Apparently, these computers were not tested with the WinG API which Lion King Unfortunately required in order to work.

And because Christmas meant buying a shit-ton of toys or games for your children, COMPAQ had to rush out these new computers to the masses.

Whatever, many a developer avoided WinG like a plague because the API was very picky about what Graphics Card or Chipsets it likes... at least in the mid-90s.

As terrible as Customer Support was for parents calling both Disney Software and Compaq, complaining about those Error Messages or Blue Screens, at least one company responded.

And that company is:

Yes. That Microsoft! The maker of everybody's favorite Operating System, as well as everybody's favorite punching bag due to the company demanding our money and information.... but we still begrudgingly support because of important Software Compatibility and XBOX.

But Microsoft in 1994 and 1995 took notice about the Lion King Compaq Debacle because at the time, they were hard at work finetuning on the most important Operating System of the 90s.
Apparently, this freaked the shit out of the developers of Windows 95 because they want their operating system to be the dominant Front-End for playing PC Games on your computer, at a time where developers would only make their games be playable on MS-DOS.

So after they took notice of the Lion King WinG Compaq debacle, the got to work on making their API that would make running games on Windows Painless.

That API would be referred to as

This API would ensure that the game runs flawlessly on your PC no matter what.

And to this day, this API is still in active development.

Currently, we are now running DirectX12 for many of our modern titles
though your many older games still work just fine using older versions of the API which your computer can happily install.

Modern GPUs like your Nvidia RTXs, AMD Radeon RXs, and Intel ARCs have this symbol on the box from where your GPU came from.

The funny thing is Windows 95 originally did not ship with the DirectX but it did become available out of the Box with Win95 OEM Service Release 2 as well as later Windows OSes such as NT 4.0, 98, etc.

And yes, DirectX is available for Linux too but that's only for Distros with the Windows Subsystem for Linux but would people care if they use this wonderful piece of Software Combability layer shown below:
"I'm for Windows Compatibility on Linux. Not for drinking."

So the next time you buy or build your new computer, upgrade your GPU, etc, remember to give thanks to the Majestic Lion who helped inspire a Microsoft to develop the most important API for all of your PC Games you play.
