The surprisingly delicious origins of Compaq

I can't resist posting this on March 14 but we all know what that date signifies for all of us Math Nerds.

The equation as well as the delicious pun associated with it, it all makes sense in context.

And we all thank the late LARRY SHAW for encouraging the puns since 1988.

So to take advantage of the pun, how's about a story about the origins of COMPAQ.

Now COMPAQ is no longer with us as HP bought the company in 2002 and discontinued the name in 2013 in favor of using their own Pavilion, ENVY, OMEN names, etc.

But the story of how this former industry giant was formed in quite interesting indeed.

The story goes that 3 disgruntled TEXAS INSTRUMENTS senior managers who go by

ROD CANION,

JIM HARRIS,

and BILL MURTO

left TEXAS INSTRUMENTS in 1982 due to lack of faith and loss of confidence.

Aside from a failed attempt to start a chain of Mexican styled restaurants, the three decide to start their own computer company.

While in the planning stages for their first computer, which would be the COMPAQ PORTABLE,

the three had a luncheon at the HOUSE OF PIES

During the design phase of COMPAQ PORTABLE, the design plans for the computer were drawn on the back of a placemat

Believe it or not, THE HOUSE OF PIES is still open to this day despite the change of times as well as the restaurant having to fight tooth and nail to remain in operational service during and after the pandemic.

Ever since that fateful luncheon, COMPAQ grew exponentially during the better part of the 1980s and into the 1990s as king of IBM COMPATIBLE manufacturers.

Up until HP snatched up COMPAQ and usurped the name into their line of Computers until HP Decided to discontinue the name in 2013.... at least for NORTH AMERICA.

Now as for my experiences with COMPAQ computers, I actually had a Presario way back when I was a toddler in 1999.
That thing you see above this sentence was my very first computer I ever used when I was just 1 and a half.

Fast forward about 10 years later in 2009 when I was 11, I got a job at this Computer Repair outlet called REBOOT.

While working at storage, I stumbled upon this bigass Computer that looked like a cross between a briefcase and SINGER BRAND luggable Sewing machine.

It was a Compaq Portable, Green Phosphor Display and 5.25" Floppy Drive and all.

It only worked for one day that time I visited but the next day I demoed the machine, it stopped working.

The fan and display worked, but all we saw was a blinking cursor, so that indicated that the COMPAQ PORTABLE suffered a RAM failure.

Now here's something a bit unrelated but is something to satisfy my own personal head canon.

I was watching an episode of DOUG, specifically the one where the Funnie Family gets their first Computer installed in the living room....
(FYI, I watched on Disney+ and Captured on my AVERMEDIA LiveGamer 2Plus)
The computer is stated to be a POWER PORTAL PC 2000 but I highly doubt so.
It could have been a rebadged COMPAQ PRESARIO from 1999 for all I know.

Then Theda asks whether Phil should have had the PC configured to have an additional 128MB of PC100 Ram, 2GB Hard Drive, an upgradable CPU and Zip Drive,

well.... here's my take on that line of dialogue.

128MB of PC100 or DDR Ram was indeed desirable in 1999, especially at a time when PCs usually shipped with either 32mb or 64mb of Ram installed from the factory.

A 2GB HDD in 1999?
Ok, so maybe it already had a 2GB installed which may have been standard in 1999 but that's somewhat miniscule even at that time when most PCs in 1999 can go up to 10GB or more installed in 1999.

LGR's COMPAQ PRESARIO 5000US from 2001 came with a 30GB HDD for crying out loud so really the blame for that 2GB HDD line of dialogue should be blamed on writer Bernie Denk.

AN UPGRADEBALE CPU on the other hand..... well this was 1999 when the Pentium III and AMD Athlon Specification were brand new so I have a hunch that Theda was hoping the motherboard wasn't of the SLOT 1 variety unless the computer had a Celeron that she didn't want and would have preferred a PENTIUM III Cartridge.

So yeah, in 1999, the Power Portal 2000 may have been equipped with a 300mhz Celeron which would warrant a 600mhz Pentium III.

And while a ZIP Drive was considered a desire in 1999, I don't know if Theda was talking about the internal or External ZIP Drives.

Whatever.

My head canon: THE POWER PORTAL PC 2000 is really just a rebadged PRESARIO.

But regardless, the choice of COMPAQ is admirable since I know how nostalgic people are about COMPAQ Presario's, especially with the ones from the 90s.

For me, I only had my COMAPAQ for about a year and a half before my dad replaced it with a
VOBIS HIGHSCREEN in 2000
and that was eventually replaced 5 years later with my MDG Horizon PC in 2005

After 3 Laptops, I eventually built my own machines and right now, I'm on my
MAVERICK FALCON 7900RT PC that I've built.

Here are the SPECs for my PC:

And it's been recently updated to include the fact that I've swapped out the Wisteria Switches out of my EPOMAKER KEYBOARD.

Maverick Foods 04-Poplar Korean

It was Sunday March 9 2025,

After a good Service at my Church involving Camera work,

I went to this Korean Restaurant at 49th and Victoria Street in Vancouver.

I went and I've got to say, the food is pretty good.

And according to my mother, She likes this new Korean Restaurant better than the one that's near our Church, Veterinarian's Office, Supermarket, and my Bank.

Though she likes the Bubble Waffles at the Korean Restaurant near said Church.

Why such short sentences?

The food was so good that words can't describe my enthrallment.

This is my first Maverick Foods Post since December 18 2024 when I went to DALAT that day.

And another thing that's different is that I swapped out all of the Wisteria Switches in my Epomaker Keyboard.

If you're asking what Switches I'm using now,
I'm using my new AKKO V3 Matcha Green Heavy Linear Switches.

I've been meaning to get back to Linear Switches since I discontinued using my previous Razer Blackwidow V3 TKL Keyboard.

But unlike my Razer which used it's own Yellow Switches,

These AKKOs I'm using have a heavier actuation and I've since been wanting to go to using switches that have a heavier actuation.

The Problem with Symmetry & why you should champion asymmetry both in the facial expression and the posing.

One thing to really get a sense in designing characters is to make sure that you understand that NOT EVERYTHING IN LIFE IS ABOUT SYMMETTRY!!!

Seriously!

Look at yourself in the mirror, does everything in your face scream SYMMETRY!?

NO IT DOESN'T!!!

The focus on Asymmetry is key to making your characters look lively.

Symmetry is not king, all it does is make your characters look wooden or in this case, dead.

Frank Thomas, Late Animator and member of Disney's Nine old Men, warned us about the dangers of symmetry in the 1981 book DISNEY ANIMATION: THE ILLUSION OF LIFE

Though the example above has more to do with poses instead of facial construction.

But the principle is still the same: AVOID SYMMETRY!!!

I first learnt about the dangers of Facial Symmetry by taking a photo comparing the facial similarities of both Nadia and Shinji.

I don't have the photo with Shinji at the moment but the photo of Nadia from above does illustrate how unnatural symmetry really is. Just pay attention to her hair.

Compare that to this scene of Nadia below

So until I find the Nadia/Shinji photo, I'll have to use this example of RONALD REAGAN

Anyway, Take a look at this drawing of Mickey Mouse as drawn by Freddie Moore.

Nothing in this pose is symmetrical. It's all differing facial muscle poses between the left and right side of the face.

That's one thing to take important note of.

One thing to really grasp in terms of really understanding how unnatural symmetry is to understand how your facial muscles hold your face together.

Many artists, regardless if it's 2D, CGI, Puppet Rigs, etc.

Do know about how the facial muscle structure works but often neglect to understand how important it is to understand that your facial muscles cannot grant PERFECT SYMMETRY.

This is a major issue and pretty much why I still get a bit peeved whenever I see drawings from fan artists but it's always symmetry this or symmetry that in terms of the face.

We've all been in art classes in the past so we should know this by now.

And I also been through that trial before with my characters.

I've also learned that even if I'm forced to draw my characters with at least a hint of symmetry, it's not guaranteed to be perfect.

But that's ok.

That's because I got natural talent. I don't need to use a measurement chart just to draw a character. I just rely on my natural instincts when I'm drawing characters on a canvas.

Such as this drawing of a Befuddled Hayden Brentwood shown below

(On the left side of the canvas)

Yes, his nose and light source highlights look symmetrical but this was drawn with pure raw talent, without the need for any measurements of the face or the body.

And believe me, Even though Western Cartoons are just as guilty of using symmetry for their characters, (I'm looking at you SIMPSONS, & FAMILY GUY)

There are still holdout examples that subvert that symmetry rule.

Take for example, DOUG FUNNIE as shown below.

Throughout the almost 9 year run of DOUG(Both Nickelodeon & Disney), There aren't many times that DOUG faces the camera with his front profile but despite his simplistic face, he never shows any signs of symmetry.

"You wanna know why?
Because of my big NOSE. That's why."

Yes, DOUG..... I mean..... Quailman.

Because of Doug's big nose, he never has any sense of perfect symmetry in the face.

But you also forgot that fact that most of the time, it's also due to the artists' being mandated by Jim Jinkins to remove one eyebrow off of DOUG and friends' face.

Even when the Mouse House took over the DOUG I.P in 1996, they still respected Jim's NO SYMMETRICAL EYEBROW mantra.
"Regardless of Network change, the Single Eyebrow Mantra remains the same!"

Alright, cut it out Quailman!!! I'm doing the typing here.

And symmetry is not limited only to the face but also to posing.

This is referring to twinning and it's generally discouraged in Animation posing.

Again, let's refer to this drawing from Frank Thomas about the dangers of symmetry with posing.
As Thomas said, if the poses are the same in the body, sans the position of the head, then the pose is considered dead as demonstrated by the cardboard cutout of Mickey in Figure Page 2.
Page 3 is more lively where Mickey's hands are in different positions and his front torso on his
COG is bent a little forward.
Also, his symmetrical expression is designed with a more natural slanted oval shape.

I've seen some scenes from Anime during the 2010s where the animators and some fan artists were so obsessed with symmetry and twinning that it I didn't realize it in the first place but now it's starting to bug me.

It's still a problem today but at least it's now under more control both production and fanart.

Take this example of Chika Komari from MAKEINE
Her blushing here looks like a symmetrically twinned pose but it's actually asymmetrical.
Pay attention to her hair, the position of her knuckles, her eyebrows, and the fact she's holding her iPhone SE (3rd Gen) in her hand.

Again, Komari-Chan from MAKEINE.
Pose is still asymmetrical.
And it's not limited only to her design or pose but also her head position.
Also the light source.

I'm using anime examples since it's all still Hand-Drawn because If were to use modern Western Animated examples, my comparisons and blowback would have been egregious.

But some would say, Why criticize Symmetry when it's also used in CGI.

During the modeling phase, Symmetry is used no matter what so you can get the face just right.

but I cut CGI some Slack because the symmetry can be deprecated once the rigging comes along....

Then you can afford all that asymmetrical posing and expressions you can ask for.

I was planning to do this blogpost talking about symmetry and avoiding twinning in the poses since the January 2023 migration from Wix Blog to Blogger.com,

But things in my life just happen and I've since lost a lot of control, what with industry frustrations alike.

Now 2 years later, I finally got around to doing said post.

In terms of digital drawings, I don't use measuring tools when I draw my characters.
I always rely on hand-eye coordination and raw natural talent.

That and I always start my digital drawings on paper first before I scan the drawings into my PC using my Canon Pixma Printer's built-in Scanner and then take it into photoshop.

And yes, I even draw my characters on Photoshop before I take them into the Modeling phase so I can get a sense of how to model my character in MAYA.

Anyway, be sure to be on a lookout for future posts about Animation, Modeling, acting,

And yes, even DOUG.

As always, see you next blogpost.

Maverick Quickie-Congratulations FLOW

Well, this film slipped past me back in 2024 that I didn't even realize it until the ACADEMY announced the Oscar winner of for BEST ANIMATED FEATURE of 2024

Well, I can't update my 2024 Winners Blogpost just to include this film but I will at least use this MAVERICK QUICKIE to congratulate GINTS ZILBALODIS for winning the Oscar for this film.

Here's hoping for a brighter future for him and his next projects.

The Bapaco: A Mechanical Keyboard's 40+ year Old Coincidence

On February 27 2025, I found this photo on Facebook talking about a mechanical keyboard that somewhat looks like a laptop with a Jerry-Rigged display.

Ladies and Gentleman, this keyboard below is the Bapaco, a Mechanical Keyboard that is also a Jerry-Rigged laptop running Windows 11.

I never made my comment on Facebook about it but the more I look at this photo, the more I realize that this Keyboard reminds me of a certain Laptop from the Mid-1980s.....

Yeah, I could not pass up the opportunity to compare that Mechanical Keyboard to the IBM PC Convertible from 1986.

But I have a few takeaways of that keyboard above compared to the IBM Convertible.

Notice the layout?

This is a 65% Compact Keyboard which omits the function row and relegates the function keys to somewhere else on the keyboard depending on the manufacturer.

I actually don't like when keyboards omit important keys like this because it's not appropriate for a work environment.

And we can all thank the original Macintosh 128k's keyboard for teaching us about the dangers of missing keys.

Another reason I don't like 65 Compact or 40% layouts is because many games have bindings set by default that don't lend themselves very well to said layout.

The 1986 PC Convertible from IBM has a nice pseudo-75% Compact layout that I like because it has all the important Function keys that make navigating and shortcuts essential for your workloads, especially since IBM in the 1980s were all-in on Business, not games,

Unlike their competitors or PC clone manufacturers.

"Another reason for me not being for games is because my processor is clocked at 4.77MHZ"

Plus, the PC Convertible has a detachable screen so you can opt for an External CGA Monitor of the time period

And the PC Convertible has it's own printer that you can insert to the Computer

Though the advantage of the Bapaco shown way above and now below you is the fact that it's a full fledged PC.

It runs an Intel Core i5 1235U Processor

Has 32GB of DDR5 Ram,

and a 2TB SSD.

It also has a 5000 mAh Battery with a 6 Hour life on a full charge,

And the key switches are Hot-Swappable, just like my Epomaker Keyboard.

With those specs listed above, I hope the Bapaco is not a gimmick and is the real deal.

Jason Langevin, aka JAYZTWOCENTS, did a review of a similar product from MAXFREE back in July 31 2024 and I can recall from seeing that video he did not like the product due to some issues with connectivity with the screen and the USB-C Cables.

And the MAXFREE keyboard cost $200 when he reviewed it.

Why does the Bapaco cost between $600 to $900?

Because it's a fully fledged computer with Laptop components so it's a given that it costs more because it can do more than just be a Keyboard with a built-in Touchscreen.

As for me, I'm sort of Interested in it since I need to replace my MSI Laptop sometime this year but I mostly will use the Bapaco as my laptop instead of my daily driver keyboard since I need my coveted Function Key row.

My only complaint about the Bapaco, aside from the keyboard layout, is that it's running an Intel i5 CPU instead of an AMD Ryzen 5.

Granted the i5 is a 12th Gen instead of 13th, 14th, or 15th Gen CPU but when it comes to CPUs, I'm AMD Ryzen all the way.

All in all. the Bapaco is a solid product.

And yes, I spent a February without any Maverick Quickies which was a relief for me but lo-&-behold, I'm back to the Quickies this month.

No, I'm not suffering writers block,

It's just that I end up finding interesting tech products like the Bapaco since I'm have interest in Computer Hardware since I built Computers for myself and for my friends.

And I just can't help myself when I find interesting

And brace yourselves for more tech goodies that I uncover from the depths of WEB3, aka THE INTERNET.

And yes, I encourage those to back projects like the Bapaco Keyboard.

It's important to support the works of those who create independent projects like keyboards, games, books, and even animation.

If you're interested in the Bapaco,

Here's the Kickstarter link to said product:

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/944362954/bapaco-the-worlds-first-keyboard-with-a-built-in-computer

The product is in limited quantities however so back the project with your money while you can.....

Unless it becomes available on AMAZON.

According to the product timeline, the Launch is expected May 2025.

And pretty excited for this project so let's hope it turns out to be a really good one.

Update as of AUGUST 2 2025:
I never got the BAPACO.
Instead, I ended up buying a DELL INSPIRON 7445 2-IN-1 RYZEN 7 Laptop.
