The above header should so no more.
I just love large displays to begin with.
They are the CHADLIEST displays that money could buy as well as have all that viewing area that you can ask for.
So why am I obsessed with large displays again?
Back in the early 2000s when I was a toddler, I had my Second computer:
A VOBIS HIGHSCREEN SKY
My family had this amazing looking 21" KDS VGA Monitor.
Yup. That photo is of me as a Toddler in a size comparison of my head vs. that Monitor. I thought Computer monitors wouldn't go larger than 17", especially since most businesses and schools avoid monitor sizes larger 17” or 19” but that KDS Monitor was a MONSTER.Sure, people have mixed feelings about KDS monitors but that monitor was just monstrous in size.
Unfortunately, My mother got rid of that monitor once we got our WINDOWS XP machine:
An MDG HORIZON 2400 PC.
I went with 2 monitors on that machine. A Samsung, and later a ViewSonic but none of them had the monstrous size of the KDS monitor that I had as a toddler.
It's funny how ideologies on Monitor sizes have changed once we made the switch from CRTS to flat panels.....
more like when monitors switched from 4:3 to 16:9 aspect ratios and suddenly, the difference is now staggering.
So now, a 24" monitor to me feels smaller in the world of flat displays when compared to how a big 21" CRT monitor looks to it's smaller 19", 17", or even 15" cousins.
I think I have the answer and it can only be told in the words of THE 8-BIT GUY:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PLO8Yt0OwMQ
But if you want my words for it, I think what's going on is MANUFACTURERS are fudging up the measurements when comparing monitor sizes of the same dimensions when you compare it from 4:3 vs 16:9.
So lets say, you measure the screen size of that KDS vs my ACER QG241Y monitor.
The difference is staggering.
Suddenly, what felt big on a CRT looks small on a flat panel.
It's not helped by the fact that the large size of the KDS monitor was just the outer shell surrounding the Cathode Tube. The viewable tube looks more 19" compared to the outer shell but then again, the tube would be smaller on a 19" monitor's outer case.
Modern day monitors, especially gaming monitors are built more differently compared to the CRT Monitors in the past.
Nowadays, modern day monitors are built where the screen size is roughly the size as the base, right up to the bezel of the housing. And if you look off the edges of the monitor and move your mouse cursor to that edge, you can see slight hint of what looks holographic.I first noticed this when I looked at an ultra-wide monitor at my local LONDON DRUGS.
To me, a computer monitor is a computer monitor so the design of the outer shell doesn't matter to me. What matters are the internals and the specs because I look at what's inside of a monitor (Figuratively speaking).
What also matters is what's the max resolution, the refresh rate, whether it supports HDR colors, what cables it uses to connect to your graphics card, or if it's curved or ULTRA-WIDE screen.
So why am I obsessed?..... good god I'm sounding like a broken record.
It’s because of that 21” KDS Monitor.
I’ve been wanting to recreate that feeling I had as a kid where I had big honking monitors connected to a computer.
The closest I had to re-experiencing larger displays on my perfect 20/20 vision eyes happened during my college years. My school had these 27” Dell 1440p monitors as well as those WACOM Cintiq 32 displays and I was mesmerized by them.
But alas, they belonged to the school so I was left to my guns, aka my cash.
Back in January 2022, I was walking alongside Norquay park near my house when I saw this:
It was a large 27” Dell Monitor just lying on the ground. I brought it home, cleaned it up, and plugged it in but I was in for a shock: the damn thing was damaged. The panel was absolutely damaged. It did turn on and the display lit up but the monitor’s panels were damaged beyond repair.
Not that it would matter since the Dell Monitor probably had a max refresh up to 60hz or 75hz so it probably would be a no go for today’s me.
So I ended up having that monitor e-cycled.
Then I had this CHADLY MSI G2712 Esports gaming monitor which I bought in August 2023.
Too bad on January 25 2024, that MSI monitor's capacitors started to go bad and now I have these ugly-ass horizontal lines appearing at the bottom of the screen so essentially, that monitor is now busted.
For 3 weeks, I went back to using my old troper:
The ACER NITRO QG241Y monitor which I'm not thrilled to go back to despite being more reliable than the MSI Monitor I was using.
For one, my Acer Monitor is 24" which is smaller than the 27" MSI monitor. And it's max refresh is 75HZ so not very smooth but I guess smoother than a 60hz monitor.
If refresh rates weren't an issue, I would have asked my friends or my co-workers to supply me with one but most monitors you use for an office job are maxed out at 60hz so that's a no-go for me.
I recently bought an ASUS TUF GAMING VG27AQ Monitor which has effectively replace the old MSI Monitor. I like that monitor because it has a high refresh which is what I was looking for in the first place as well as a 1440p resolution so it's much higher than my MSI monitor.
I could have tempted myself to get an ULTRA-WIDE monitor but since I like to have my PC next to my monitor and since I barely have the desk space required as shown in the image below, I can't get ultrawide unless I put the tower underneath my desk but then that would defeat the purpose of having ARGB in my Case to begin with.
I wish I could have gone for a DELL monitor but that company really likes to overprice their monitors, especially for the ones that have a high refresh and large size that I'm looking for.
And FYI, I no longer use my ZOTAC RTX 3060 GPU anymore. Since November 2023, I've upgraded to a GIGABYTE EAGLE RTX 4080 GPU.
